Just take the following measures:
Clean the lens of the writer with the help of a lens cleaner available in the market so as to increase th life of the writer.
Use an original and proper burning software which best supports your writer or which is provided in the box.(For Example-Nero Burning Rom 7, Roxio Easy cd creator etc.)
Do not use the tray of the writer roughly.Handle it with extreme care otherwise *’RAM NAM SATYA’. If it gets damaged then you wont be able to write cd’s properly and with ease.
To keep your writer just free, pay attention to your computer’s overall weekly cleaning.If possible, after switching off the computer cover it with cloth.

Insert or withdraw your cd from the tray only with the help of the button provided, do not push it forcibly as it will damage the writer machinery.
Do not insert a cd with lots of scratches as it make the lens weaker day by day resulting in improper burning.
If any problem with the writer, do not try to open it or fiddle with it yourself, take it to a computer vendor.
Turn off all the programs running in the background while burning a cd as for the writer to perform better.
While Burning, try to choose the lowest writing speed as low speed assists proper burning.
Use only good quality discs for burning.
