Kapi/Coffee-A necessary evil

The wonderful aroma of roasting coffee beans, brewing coffee in filters and drinking them in steel tumblers are as important to the South Indians as their daily idli-sambar!

But as kids, we were never allowed to have more than a cup of coffee(a drop of the decoction in a whole glass of milk) since it was considered bad for us.

I always managed to convince my mom to give me a cup or two of some strong coffee during exams though. They never helped drive away the sleep though and I would end up drinking the coffee and sleeping on the table itself!

I have been introduced to coffee in the following forms and have enjoyed each one of them:

  1. The traditional tumbler of filter coffee

  2. The mug of instant coffee

  3. Starbucks’ Small-size coffee(in which I would empty atleast 10-15 satchets of sugar and milk) and have trouble finishing it

  4. Cafe Coffee Day’s Mocha/Latte/Cappucino

  5. Cold coffee-made with the Nescafe Shake-Shake at home, Cafe Coffee Days’ varieties etc.

We are all aware of the fact that coffee contains caffeine(!); I consciously keep my consumption to less than 2-3 cups a day.

But how many of us know that the following also contain caffeine, though in less significant proportions:

  1. Tea

  2. Chocolate-milk, milk/dark chocolate

  3. Coke, Pepsi

This would mean that if I have 2-3 cups of coffee a day, 2-3 cups of tea, a coke/chocolate milk/pepsi and a chocolate- I am exceeding my allowable caffeine content for the day!

Anyway, Happy caffeine-ing to all ye coffee-lovers

Cheers
