I would like to share an experience that I had with Motorola mobile phones post sales service. Three years back I had bought a Motorola T180 Talkabout model mobile phone. It was one of the first models in India which was available with a proper bill. since I was a stickler for doing the right thing by the law, I preferred it over other nokia models which had better features but were available at a similar price only from the grey market. a couple of years down the line I picked up another mobile phone - this time a nokia phone (the prices of mobile phones from the regular market had rationalised by then). I had stopped using the T180. Three months ago I needed another mobile phone at home. Instead of buying another I decided to get the battery replaced in the T180 so that I could use it.
However I was told that the battery cost Rs 800 and also that it was not available. I decided to buy a new one and get the old one exchanged. To my dismay I was told that the old phone will fetch 50 Rs (against the original purchase price of Rs 4000). Not that I was expecting to get anything above Rs 500 for it. But I was certainly not willing to sell it for Rs 50. I again felt that I should probably buy the battery and start using the T180 again.
So I went to the service center and left an indent to buy the battery. Alas its been over a month and inspite of repeated requests the battery has not been made available. I have two pieces of advice for prospective purchasers of any mobile phone - the organisation does not seem to bother about spares supplies for old phones and instead is concentrating entirely on selling the razr v3 model in india - the spares even if they are available are likely to be very expensive - this piece of info should form the backdrop of any mobile phone purchase by any reader.
Please check how serious the organisation is about providing spares for the older versions of its phones.
