Your Voice - Use It... Or Lose It

As a voice trainer, I always stress the critical importance of practicing if you are, or want to be, a singer. The voice is a muscle and if you don’t exercise it, it atrophies. Singers must realise that their voice is their biggest asset - and if they don’t use it, they run the risk of losing it.

Here are Seven Dos/Don’ts that I compel my students to adhere to:

  1. Practise every morning for at least an hour. If you don’t have the time, well, you aren’t a singer then!

  2. Push your voice new highs and lows - choose songs that test your vocal abilities for taking high notes and low ones. This builds the range of your voice.

  3. Drink lots of water - make it a habit to drink at least 10 glasses of water every day. The mechanism of the voice runs on water so keep hydrating the system for best results.

  4. Don’t stress your voice needlessly by shouting out orders, yelling at people and singing hard rock songs.

  5. Do deep breathing exercises for at least ten minutes each morning.

  6. Increase your stamina by periodically doing a practice session in which you do ten to twelve songs in a row without taking a break.

  7. Stop smoking.
