My Favourite Hollywood Film: TOPGUN (in english)
This is an old classic documentary that was released in the year 1985. It is categorised as a documentary because it is based on true stories and real events that took place in Americas recent history. The cast consists of people who have become legends today. The film was directed by Mr. Tony Scott and produced by Mr. Don Simpson & Mr. Jerry Bruckheimer, owners of MGM(Metro Goldwyn Mayor) Studios, USA. Topgun was released by Paramount Pictures in the year 1986. An interesting fact of this movie is that it was released only in 2 Continents, North America and later in South America. The logic behind it is because it is a military movie that reveals top secrets of the United States Air Force(USAF) and its Navy Command(USNC). Another reason why its release was restricted by AMA(American Movies Association) is that there is lot of pro-american and anti-iraqi sentiments that were forbidden during the Gulf War. It may be noted that just after 1 year of this films release, The United States launched a sustained military campaign and started the Gulf War with Iraq and Kuwait in 1989-1994.
This film is based on the American Training School known as Topgun. It is the highest qualification for any officer to achieve after completing graduation. To get into the elite batch of trainees, a military student has to achieve optimum scores in Army, Navy and Air Force Training. He or She must possess physical fitness, a sharp mind, vast knowledge of military equipments and war strategy as well as lots of stamina, skill and perseverance. The plot of this movie is based first on the U.S Navy and later the U.S Air Force. However it mainly shows the life and efforts of Mr. Pete Mitchell, Lieutenant(Played by Tom Cruise), his callsign being *Maverick. *His love interest is played by the actress, Kenny McGillis. She plays the role of an U.S Air Force Trainer in this movie. There are some other remarkable performances by the supporting cast, each one of them is today a legend in Hollywood. They are Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan, Demi Moore, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jim Cash.
This film is primarily based on the United States Army, Navy and Air Force. It also deals with the war strategy and training days of the past. However there is minimal use of violence and force. The first part of the film consists of romantic scenes, soulful songs and melodious background scores. The final part consists of good action, great photography(Cinematography by Thomas Scott) and great soundtrack composed jointly by Mr Herald F. Mayor and Hans Zimmer. I like this movie for all the above features and I believe it is part of Americas Classic Cinema. It shows the great American Way of Life and the American Dream that was in fashion during the 80S and 90S.
The other hollywood films that I like are: Speed(1996), Titanic(1998), The Firm(1994), Twister(1995), Jaws(1991), Cliffhanger(1992), Broken Arrow(1999), Pulp Fiction(1997), Sweet November(2003), Godfather(1984), Silence of the Lambs(1990), The Sound of Music(1993), Ghost(1999), Jurassic Park(1992), The LionKing(1996)
Besides Take my breath away, there are some more great soundtracks in this movie, they are Mighty Wings by cheaptrick
The Topgun Anthem composed by Harold F Faltermayor and Hans Zimmer
Great Balls of fire sung by tom cruise himself and then there is another good song, Turn Me On sung by an unknown female. She has a soothing voice! It is very easy on the eardrums and the nerves of the listener.and who can forget the Piano Composition in MEMORIES,
the song plays during the movie at the perfect time!
