The Canvio comes preloaded with backup software, a usability feature that many top-notch external hard drives provide. Toshiba says the drive is designed with the intent to make PC backup easy and convenient, and the simplicity of using both the drive and the included software seem to adequately accomplish that objective. The application offers set-it-forget-it functionality that allows you to select files and schedule automated incremental backups. The software, however, isn’t entirely bare bones; it surprisingly offers advanced, customizable options that are apt for tech-savvy users. For instance, there is an advanced restore option you can use to retrieve lost files, and an overwrite function.
We were pleased to find that Toshiba offers technical support for the drive via email and telephone. Not so impressive is Toshiba’s lack of technical resources. While the Toshiba website has a FAQs section, it only answers general questions, and there aren’t really any resources specific to the Canvio portable hard drive.
