Etios Diesel: Verdict

Zeroing on a car is a big exercise these days. However, with a clear head and mind this exercise would not waste your time and energies. I was in a search of a diesel sedan and hence pulled up my socks around 2 months back to shortlist a few which suited my budget, head and mind. The pre-buying exercise was very well done in order to have the most important attributes in mind before visiting the showrooms.

With a budget of around 7 lakhs the nearest options boiled down to :

  1. Suzuki Dzire

  2. Ford Classic

  3. Tata Manza

  4. Toyota Etios

  5. Mahindra Verito

In order to eliminate the confusion of the vivid options available, a clear mind set was required to pen down the priority list.

Priority was :

  1. A family size sedan.

  2. Good after sales

  3. Decent resale value

  4. Reliablity

  5. Build Quality

Following cars were ruled out , since they didnt fall in my priority list:

  1. Suzuki Dzire : The boot and rear was cramped. Not a real family sedan

  2. Ford Classic : Poor resale and high spares/service cost

  3. Tata Manza : Worst after sales and build quality. Bad Resale too.

Left with 2 options :

  1. Toyota

  2. Mahindra ; was later ruled out on the grounds of being under powered and never saw the car running much on road or parked around anywhere in neighbourhood too. Secondly, comparing Mahindra with Toyota simplified the elimination further. Bought Toyota Etios GD finally on August 1’ 2012 and am happy about my decision. Family too is glad to have it owned.

What I liked :

• Same Diesel engine technology (D4D) powering all Toyota’s from Liva through Prado, minimal turbo lag and excellent drive.

• Fuel efficiency. Ran 700 Kms in 40 Litres throughout city driving in Delhi/Noida. Average : 17.5 KMPL. Hoping the average would increase in months to come.

• A practical family sedan

• Spacious interiors can easily carry 5 adults

• Balanced suspension

• Toyota’s excellent after-sales service

What I didn’t :

• NVH levels are comparatively high, however drop down while revving around and above 60 KMPH.

In a nutshell :

A Practical Performer with Non flashy looks. With the trio of Toyota badge, Diesel engine and 7.25 Lakh pricing (On Road), this one checks all the right boxes. The good drive is a bonus.
