Theres lots of talk about hybrid cars these days. Various manufacturers are rolling out new models between now and the next two years.
Toyota and Honda were the first to come to market with excellent products. I chose Prius because of Toyotas reputation, a long and crowded commute, and the vehicles 4 door size. My fear was the vehicles low horsepower, and ability to pass and manuever in Atlanta traffic.
Ive had my car for 16 months now and I cant say how happy I am with the purchase. There is plenty of pep in the Prius to get on and off the highway, and to get up hills and around slow vehicles. My gas mileage is averaging between 46 and 47 miles per gallon. The air conditioner on will cause you to lose 2-3 miles per gallon. The trunk space is adequate to carry bales of peat moss, my golf clubs, and most anything you would normally carry in your trunk.
Ive had no mechanical problems, and five free oil changes courtesy of Toyota. I purchased the 100, 000 mile warranty on the battery, because I wanted to be certain that I had coverage beyond the standard 60, 000. I did have one problem with a tire wearing out at 22K miles, but no other issues. Ive driven it as far as Charlotte, NC, about 230 miles and never became fatigued or uncomfortable.
What I like the most is the excellent gas mileage. This is a great little get-around car, and great as a second family vehicle. If your ego is tied up in what you drive, then this may not be your car. But if you have a need for great gas mileage, and have an environmental bone in your body, then I highly recommend that you look into the Prius.
I hear that waiting lists are long in some places, and I have not seen any advertised resales in the Atlanta market, which may say something about its value.
By the way, the sound system is very good. I have an in-dash single cd changer with AM-FM radio.
