Good bike, but the after sales service is bad

When the time came for me to own a bike (since commuting in buses in Bangalore without knowing the language was tough for me), I decided to go for a Fiero FX, which had a lot of chrome and somewhat classic looks.

I went ahead and purchased the bike for 52k in June 2004. The bike did not have electric start but had the disc brakes option. I drove the bike around in Bangalore for almost 2 years, and I was very satisfied with the performance and the mileage it gave (it used to give me around 70 at one point of time. No, I am not exaggerating). The looks of the bike can be really appealing to people who do not really like the bikes with shields (as in CBZ or even fiero F2). The bike has good handling ability, and no troubles on cold start.

As mentioned earlier, it used to give me amazing mileage for almost 2 years since purchase. The posture on the bike is very good, and you can really clock a lot of kilometers in the city without getting a backache. Not the fastest off the block in the 150cc segment, but the power is uniform, and has a great smoothness to it unlike the rough power train of bikes like Pulsar.

The one major drawback I could find was the factory-fitted tyres. The original TVS tyres makes the vehicle really wobbly if the road is even slightly wet. This makes the bike very dangerous to negotiate turns during rainy season. You will get really afraid even when it runs over freshly painted traffic lines.

On a whole, I was patting me on my back for my decision, when my company transferred me to Trivandrum, and the whole picture changed. Being in Bangalore, which is close to the TVS factory in Hosur, I never faced any problem sourcing spare parts, and Bangalore had a lot of service centers also. But, Trivandrum had only one service center, which, to say the least, is pathetic.

As if their rude behaviour is not enough, there was a big dearth in spare parts, and I had to run with a leaking fuel strainer for 3 months. Finally after a lot of foul mouthing and heated email exchanges with the company, they got the very essential spares replaced. Still my bike is running with a damaged sprocket, and the mileage which was envious is now hardly 50 (which is still not too bad).

Overall Fiero WAS a good bike, but I would not suggest buying it to anyone ( only used bikes now, since the company has stopped production of the model), because spare parts can become a pain.

Pros:

1) Visually appealing to those who like the classic bike looks

2) Good ride quality and posture (in dry conditions)

3) Good mileage for a 150cc bike

Cons:

1) Bad handling in wet conditions (can be rectified by changing tyres)

2) Discontinued model

3) Poor resale value

4) Servicing is horrendous
