Review: In an era where Honda has been dominating the moped scooter segment of the market, TVS has made a bold move in introducing the TVS Jupiter in 2014. Many people hesitated as it was a vehicle from TVS, who is known for not producing much reliable and performance vehicles, but after riding the Jupiter, I’m pretty sure that everyone would change their opinion about TVS.

TVS already had a few scooters in the market like the Scooty Pept and Wego, but all of them seemed very small and appeared for the more teenage girl community, and they finally decided to rollout the Jupiter to make it a more family-oriented scooter. It was up against the likes of the Honda Activa which has been dominating that segment since the past decade or so, this shows that TVS was ready to attack Honda at it’s own game.

Coming to the looks of the scooter, TVS didn’t try to do too much when designing it, they kept in mind that this scooter must be a family scooter, and they didn’t play much with it and kept it as simple as possible without making it look ugly. And nowadays, people get so confused when a company tries to overdo the design, but because of it’s very simple yet elegant look, the Jupiter had attracted many potential buyers. Still, TVS did add a few small touches that simply satisfy the customers like providing it with alloy wheels.

But there are a few features of the Jupiter that make it stand out from it’s competitors like the Activa, and they include stuff like an external fuel filling, which makes it easier for the driver as he doesn’t have to get up from his seat and open up it all the time to fill fuel, but instead he can sit in the position in which he was driving and the fuel can be filled from behind. One other feature of the Jupiter is it has given a pass-by switch, and most people think that isn’t a big issue but try overtaking a vehicle at night, then you will understand how good it is to have one. Another important unique feature of the scooty is that it comes with an EZ Stand, that is TVS’s code given to it’s middle stand, which means that you have to apply little to no amount of pressure on the stand and you can place the middle stand without using up all your force and energy.

Coming to the performance of the scooty, it definitely makes you rethink about your opinions and expressions about TVS, the ride quality is very smooth, and the design of the seating and ground clearance, makes riding over potholes and speed breakers smoother and less bouncier. When it comes to overtaking, the engine definitely kicks in and overtaking is done at ease and at times when you just want to pound the throttle to take the scooty to it’s maximum potential, trust me it will not disappoint at all. Handling is one main thing which makes it far better than the Activa. Turning around the corners is done with very less effort and equilibrium is maintained when coming back to the original position. In a place like India where we handling and turning is very vital in a bike/scooter, Jupiter does not lack that at all, and that is why it is preferred by many Indians all over the country!
