Listen up!

The problem with writing on this topic is that “best” is such a relative term. It all depends on what genre of music you prefer. I personally enjoy any kind of music except may be ‘Country’. So without wasting any more time, following are the songs I like listening to when I am alone. I won’t give much information on the band or the song since it is a long list and I do not want to cross the word limit.

NOTE- THESE ARE THE FIRST TEN. (Hopefully I’d come up with the second half if my laziness permits me…)

1.    No Rain- Blind Melon

One of my all time favorite songs. Unfortunately the Blind Melon Frontman ‘Shannon Hoon’ died at the age of 28 due to drug overdose. The song speaks of how life is ordinary and yet so “mad” and how we need someone or something to wake us up and help us deal with this maddening monotony.

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain

I like watching the puddles gather rain

And all I can do is just pour some tea for two

And speak my point of view but it’s not sane

It’s not sane

2. Fly Away-Lenny Kravitz

The lyrics are not exactly very interesting yet I like this song because who does not like the idea of flying!

I wish that I could fly

Into the sky

So very high

Just like a dragonfly

I’d fly above the trees

Over the seas in all degrees

To anywhere I please

3. Born to be Wild- SteppenWolf

This is a great song about loving life and putting your energy into really having a blast while you are still here.

Take the world in a love embrace

Fire all of your guns at once

And explode into space

Like a true nature’s child

We were born, born to be wild

4. Hell’s bells- ACDC

I find this song a bit funny yet it is a great song, hands down. It glorifies “evil” and “satan” but then It is a song about rebellion and defiance.

I’ll give you black sensations up and down your spine

If you’re into evil, you’re a friend of mine

See the white light flashing as I split the night

Cos if good’s on the left, then I’m stickin’ to the right

5. Free Bird- Lynyrd Skynyrd

In the song, The singer tells the girl that there is no point in him sticking around now as he is a “free bird” now. It is about “letting go” and embracing freedom at all cost.

If I leave here tomorrow

Would you still remember me?

For I must be traveling on, now,

’Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see.

6. Bittersweet Symphony- The Verve

The song speaks of the purposeless life, a life that is spent acquiring materialistic things that do not amount to much in the end.

’Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life

Try to make ends meet

Try to find some money then you die

7. Criminal- Fiona Apple

The song is about “guilt” at the way the singer has behaved towards the one who loves her.

Heaven help me for the way I am.

Save me from these evil deeds.

Before I get them done.

I know tomorrow brings the consequence

at hand.

But I keep livin’ this day like

the next will never come.

8. Gets me through- Ozzy Osbourne

What can I say, I like songs that are somewhat of a ‘downer’. In this song, the singer tries to tell the world that there are misconceptions about him. What he is, is beyond his own control!

I’m not the kind of person you think I am

I’m not the anti-christ or the iron man

I have a vision that I just can’t control

I feel I’ve lost my spirit and sold my soul

Got no control

9. Enter Sandman- Metallica

There are too many good songs by Mettalica, but I really like this one and I listen to it before going to bed!

Exit, light

Enter, Night

Take my hand off to never-never land

Somethings wrong, shut the light

heavy thoughts tonight

And they aren’t of snow white

dreams of war, dreams of liars

dreams of dragon’s fire

and of things that will bite

sleep with one eye open

gripping your pillow tight

10. As I watch the sun F the ocean – Boy Hits Car

It is about “desire” and the “burning” and “pain” one feels at not being the “savior” of one’s beloved. All the singer can do is feel crippled with desire and feel helpless.

Can we ever forgive love for its pain?

A tragic poem that forever burns on my brain.

The city’s sweat is scaring her into her dreams

As the songs scream to fill her quiet evening.

No Nirvana, Guns N Roses, Pearl Jam, Janis Joplin and so on because they figure in most of the lists!
