Here are my selections for bittersweet romantic film songs.
- *Justuju Jiski Thi**(Umraao Jaan)
.usko to na paaya humne
A classic that needs no introduction.
- *Karoge Yaad To**(Bazaar)
Nice imagery. Song rendered by Bhupinder.
- *Din Dhal Jaaye**(Guide)
tum mujh se main dil se pareshaan
dono hain majhboor
aise mein kisko kaun manaaye
This song is best enjoyed when its heard(as opposed to seen, in which case it appears overtly self-indulgent. This is probably true for most of the songs in this list).
- *Mera Kuch Saamaan**(Ijaazat)
A painfully beautiful song sung by Asha.
- *Neela Aasmaan So Gaya**(Silsila)
aansuon mein chaand dooba raat murjhaayi
zindagi mein door tak pehli hai tanhaayi
.
humsafar jo kal the ab tehre woh begaane
mohabbat aaj pyaasi hai, badi gehri udaasi hai
Thesad version of an earlier song in the movie sung by Lata.
- *Jhonka Hawa Ka**(Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam)
mere khayalon mein sanam khud se hi baatein karti hogi na
main dekhta hoon chup chupke tumke mehsoos karti hoga na
Another song crafted with creativity and emotion. Hariharans voice suits the song perfectly. Unfortunately, the movie doesnt do it justice.
- *Piya Tora Kaisa Abhimaan**(Raincoat)
apni nayan se apni jamuna khud aap hi banave
laakh baar us mein hi nahaaye
pura na hui asnaan
sukhe kes, rookhe bes manva bejaan
One of my all-time favourites. A rare triumph where the songs mood and lyrics match that of the specific segment in the movie. The male version sung by Hariharan doesnt have the spoken verses in between whereas Shubha Mudgals version does. Both are nice but I am partial to Shubha Mudgals lovely deep voice.
- *Khuda Nigehbaan Ho Tumhaara**(Mughal-e-Aazam)
uthe janaaza jo kal hamaara
kasam hai tumko na dena kaandha
na ho mohabbat hamaari ruswa
Again, lovely song, but Dilip Kumar overacts in the movie. Thankfully, hepasses out and doesnt ruin the entire song.
- *Saranga Teri Yaad Mein**(Saranga)
sang tumhaare do ghadi beet gaye jo pal
jal bhar ke mere nain mein aaj hue ojhal
This song drags a bit in some parts, but is very romantic and beautiful overall. It was sung by both Mukesh and Rafi, and both versions are in the movies album.
- *Kitni Baatein**(Lakshya)
Even memories of Preity Zintas ugly haircut cant ruin this song.
