First I should tell you that hindi film music is five years old for me.Because I have been hearing hindi music only for the past five years.I can read and write in hindi and can understand a bit here and there.I think there is a lot of difference between the songs and the music.A song is a fusion of sound of instruments and words. The one that I enjoyed is the sound of instruments which is universal than the sound of words. But I feel a good lyrics has a special sound that even those who dont understand the language can humm the lyrics and feel it as good. The songs that I have listed here may not be the best twenty from the bollywood but definitely some of the good songs that you can really love to listen again and again. The songs are not in any particular order and all the songs are equally good in my opinion.
Let us look at the list
1)Jabu koi baat kadu jayen.
I dont know the film, the music director, the singer, the lyricicst and even I dont understand the lyrics of the song. But I like this song very much mainly because of its simple tune(Old is Gold).
I heard this song many when my roommate played it in the hostel.
I could remeber the first few lines of the song
Jabu koi baat kadu jayen
jabu koi muskhil padu jayen
tum dhena saat mera
ooh hum nawab
na koi .
2) Ramiaya wastavaiyya.
This is also a old folk song. All that I have mentioned about the first song suits this song also. It must be a mass number in its time.and some line from the song is
Ramaiya wastavaiya Ramaiya wastavaiya
meine dil thujko diya
meine dil thujko diya
excellent dance number a good fusion of telugu folk music with hindi
3)Ek ladki ko dekha to(1947 a love story)
Simply the best. A great song with nativity. I think the hero admires the beauty of his lady love in this song. The music starts with Veena bit and the flute and solo violin interludes pleases the ears.A simple rythm flows all through the song and singer I think udit narayanan has done a good job. I heard that this is a composition of Legend of Bollywood Music R.D.Burman and also his last composition oh god why u callback these kind of people so early we could have got many more songs like this.
4) Oh mera india, I love my india(Pardes)
This song I heard in one of the concerts by Hariharan. The song has all the elements to induce patriotism in the minds of the people. The song has a classical touch. The veena interlude and the alapana by hariharan and Kavitha krishnamoorthy in the song is excellent.Espaecially Kavitha has rendered good sound when she sings thepamarisa pamarisa alap at the end. At the end I like the voice of the kid who sings I love my india. The chorus singers are well used at approriate places in the song which elevates the feel of the song.
5) Chappa Chappa(Maachis)
This song has a catchy tune again sung by Hariharan and another singer. Both of them have done a good job.The begining of the song with a traditional stringed instrument palying the tune. The beats in song is rythmic and makes you dance.Eventhough it sounds like a folk song the way the singers sings the lyrics has a classical may be Hindustani touch.
6) Ladki badi anjanee hai(Kuch Kuch Hota hai)
All the songs in this album are good but this is my pick because the music director has tried to convey the emotions and mixed feelings of the lead characters in music in this song. The joy of being togather in one place, the pathos of unrevealed love by both the characters and some embarassing feel of both. I saw this movie recently. The song is also picturised well. The Solo violin played by the small boy in the middle, the violin orchestration, the chorus singers who fills the gap everywhere are well used to emote the feelings.the singers are also good.Particualrly the way in which the songs ends with the tune ofTum paas aaye by chorus andKuch kuch hota hai by the main singers is touching.Ooo oh theme by chorus at the end of every stanza is good.
7) Dum dum dolu baje(Hum dil de chuke sanam)
Excellent song with indian traditional music and and happy that even though it is a mass number. The song is very different from other compositions at the time of its release with full folk and classical music blended well. some four to five singers are used but I could recognise the voice of Kavitha krishnamoorthy she is excellent in voice modualtions. I could not belive that music directorIsmail darbar makes his debut in this film. You could see a lot of effort in his composition.
8) Dil ko thum se pyar huva(RHTDM)
This a very melodious muber by Harris Jayaraj a popular music director from south in his debut hindi film. The guitar is well used in this song. The song is sung by Roopkumar rathod and he has done a fabulous job espaecially when each stanza ends with a peculiar note followed by the same tune played in guitar. The violin interlude and voice of chorus singers are used mildly at the back at right places in the song.
9) Nahin samne(Taal)
The great melody from great Music director A.R.Rahman. Each note and sound in the song reminds you that it is a composition of A.R.Rahman. A simple song with excellent tune. The song starts well Veena palying the tune and followed by voice of hariharan he has given life to the song with his proper synths at proper places. The way he stretchesKaisi is mind blowing.Veena is the best used instrument in this song. Each line ends well with piano interlude. The second BGM is well orchestrated with the trumpets, church bells and violin and harmony. Believe me I can sing the whole song but I can understand only a few words in the song.Definitely the lyrics must be good.
10) Ishq bina(Taal)
Another song from the same album Taal.It has a good fusion of folk music and Karnatic music. The singers are traditional southindian singers Sujatha and Anuradha sriram. The main theme of the songOooo is sung by Anuradha sriram and she has been used by ARR constantly in his songs. The second stanza is sung by Sujatha and she has done a good job.But I cant understand why he uses two different singers the same character in the song .I think the female part is sung well by Sonunigam. The best used instruments in this song are flute, tabla and harmonium. The chant that comes often in the song by ARR is catchy.
