----- !! I promise you won't cry !!-----

I always believed that tragic heroes always appeal to masses as everyone is defeated at some or the other thing by someone else. It is not for nothing that’Karan’ in Mahabharat is more appealing to masses at times than Arjun who got what he wanted in his life(sort of). Well, that’s not my purpose here: my interest in these songs in due to sheer magic the music directors and singers have put in here. Also many a songs have been presented by stalwarts like Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand(one of the best when it comes to song presentation: check out Sunale tu dil ki sada from Tere Ghar Ke Samane’).

I request you to sing/hum these songs as you read to really get the kick out of it. I know I did!

(1) Tute Huwe Khwabone hamako ye sikhaya hain, Dil Ne, Dil Ne jise paya tha, Aankho ne gawaya hain

From all time great and classic Madhumati. Stanzas are worth a million dollar:’Hum dhundate hain jinako and Laut aayee sadha meri.

(2) Koi Sagar dil ko behelata nahi, Bekhudi main bhi khayal aata nahin

The anti-hero of Dil Diya Dard liya wasn’t that appreciated by janata that time but this anti hero had very appealing tragic shades. This one Dilip Kumar presents with a great restrain and he really appears in ghum and not just some odd display that is portrayed by today’s so called superstars like Shahrukh.

(3) Gujare hain aaj ishq main hum us makam se, Nafarat si ho gayee hain muhabbat he nam se

Again, Dilip in the same movie displays frustration with of course due to tragic and dramatic sequence of event in his life. Shakar’s world is totally changed when he comes back as the waris of the big sansthan etc. The 3rd stanza of this song is in different pitch(similar to Kabhi khudape kabhi halat pe roana aaya:’Kon rota hain kisi aur ki khatir ay dost’) Here it is’O bewafa tera bhi tut jaye dil

(4) Koi Humdum na raha koi sahara na raha

Although the meaning is on tragic side the mulayam voice of Kishore lends it a little playful and romantic touch.

(5) Kya se kya ho gaya, bewafa tere pyar main, Chaha kya, kya mila bewafa

Vijay-Dev Anand classic. Wahida’s best work and arguably one of the best from S.D. The song is recorded with’echo’ and Rafi sounds marvelous. Dev performs exceptionally well when under Vijay Anand, proved again in this movie and the song. This song starts right after’Mose chhal kiye jaay, haay re haay dekho saiyya be-imaan’(a masterpiece by Wahida).

(6) Waha Kaun hain tera musaphir jayega kaha

Sachinda’s sweet voice. Lyrics with intense meaning and poetic charm, lines like’Bhul gaye woh, Tu bhi bhula de, Pyar ki woh mulakate’ make you wonder how much meaning, punch and power one can pack in words.

(7) Hum jikar kya kare jab dil hi toot gaya

Saigal’s work. Heard it only 2/3 times but still can hear the’goonj’ of this song.

(8) Jag-E-Dard-E-Ishq Jaag (C. Ramchandra)

From Anarkali. Hemant Kumar’s’dheer-gambhir’ voice. There is one more song on similar lines: Nain se nain naahi mila. Not exactly a tragic song but almost on the verge.

(9) Kya Huwa Tera Wada Woh Kasam Woh Irada

Like yeh ladaka haay allah, this song also has a timeless quality about.’Oh kehene wale muzhko farebi, kaun farebi hain ye bata’. Rafi’s voice must make every person who deceived someone, guilty of the same and make them think about it. Such is a power and impact of the song. Some of the songs in Hindo cinema express in a manner that can’t be done in thousand words.

(10) Aansu bhari hain ye jiwan ki raahe, koi unse kehede hame bhool jaaye

Raj Kapoor appears mischievous rather than tragic in this song. You got to hear the original with mono track to understand Mukesh magic. Specially check out how he goes with’Barbadiyon ki ajab dasata hun

(11) Raha Gardishon main hardum meri ishq ka sitara, Kabhi dagmagayi kashti kabhi kho gaya kinara

A total depressed song. Almost like assuming defeat or after the defeat with life complaining to allmighty.

(12) Sham-E-Gham is kasam Aaaj Gamgin hain hum aa bhi aaa bhi jaa aaj mere sanam

Not exactly tragic but Dilip’s presence makes it quite intense. His thoughtful actions and of controlled emotions makes it a treat to watch. Talat’s mulayam voice is something to experience.

This songs makes me calm and forget about everything. I like it more in Madanmohan’s voice than Lata. For lyric check comments section on Jai’s review

(15) Tadap Tadap ke Is Dil Se Aah nikalti rahi muzako saja di pyar ki aisa kya gunah kiya to loot gaye.

Don’t know the singer. Pahadi awaaj makes it a great experience.

(16) Manzhile apani jagah aur raste apani jagah jab kadam hi sath na de to musaphir kya kare?

Made memorable by Amitabh’s appearance and restrained performance. The lyrics are superb with

’*Dubane Waale ko tinake ka sahara hi bahot; Dil behel jaaye fakat itana ishara hi bahot;

itane par bhi aasamawalaa gira de bijaliye.Koi batalade bhala dubata phir jkya kare*’ and also

’*Pyar karana jurm hain to jurm humase ho gaya; Kaabile maafi huwa karate nahi aise gunah;

Sangdil hain ye jahan aur sangdeel mera sanam; Kya kare josh-e-junun aur hausala phir kya karen?*’

Kishore is sublime and difficult to believe that it is Baaaappppi Da’s music!:)

(17) Suhani raat dhal chuki, naa jaane tum kabagi?

Ever heard yourself with music with a mike? It scares living daylights out of you. This song Rafi presents with almost no playback music. His voice quality is at display and man this guy must be sent by the allmighty! Check out Tadap Rahe hain hum yaha. You will see how these singers’jahag lete hain’.

(18) Tanhai, Tute khwab saare ek mayusi hain chhayi

Like it due to rhythm and also effectiveness in the movie. Lil bit credit to Aamir. The egotist person realizes how it is difficult to take no or how to deal with helpless situation when you heart is not in control of your brain.

(19) Ye duniya yeh mehephil mere kaam ki nahi

Raj Kumar looks odd! Though Rafi has poured like in this song. It is a bit loud for my tests and sung in higher note than a tragic song should be(logically speaking)!:)

(20) Hain Apana dil to awara

Surprised! Well, there is a sad version of this song at the end of the movie’Solhawan Saal’.’Kisise yeh mila tha, bataye koi kya tha, bedari ka saman tha ke tha woh sapana, woh sapane dard ke haara na jaane kispe aayega
