Jab dil hi toot gaya..........

  • Am really surprised that there are no reviews on this topic! Is it coz there aren’t any tragic songs in hindi films? [na na, aisa nahi ho sakta!]. We all know in Hindi films there is a song for every season/reason, our hero-heroines can even whip up a song at funerals! When I saw this topic I saved some of the loves songs to be added here coz they seemed to suit this review better:) Please bear with me if most of my songs are by Rafisaab, for me there cannot be any other singer who can be compared to this versatile singer, no singer can convey the pain or sadness in his voice, the way Rafisaab did

Chale aaj tum jahan se, hui zindagi parayi  -Udan Khatola

.tumhe mil gaya thikana, hume maut bhi naa aayi.O Dhoor ke Musafir, humko bhi saath lele re, hum reh gaye akele

I dont know if many of MSains would’ve seen or would remember this classic movie [I know Ganesh does:)] This song was the first time I thot the heroine was actually dying. This song is sung by Rafisaab but we see Dilip’Tragedy King’ Kumar pleading with his beloved to take him alongwith her: * kis kaam ke yeh duniya, jo zindagi se khele re, humko bhi saath le le

Dil ka khilona hai toot gaya -Gunj Uthi Shahnaii

When I first heard this song I disliked it coz here Lata is at her shrillest best [esp. when she says that’Hai’] but its only at later stages in life that one understands & appreciates the meaning of such songs * hua kya kasoor aisa saiya hamaara, jaate hue jo tuney hame na pukaara.hum toh chale the lekar tera hi sahara.saathi hamara humse rooth gaya. sob sob

Tute hue khwaabon ne, humko ye sikhaayaa hai - Madhumati

Once more, a lovelorn Dilip Kumar singing in Rafi’s voice about losing his loved one & lamenting the way his life has turned out. I have to mention just a few lines here: dil ne jise paayaa tha, aankhon ne gavayaa hai.hum dhundhate hain unko, jo milake nahi milate, ruthe hain na jaane kyu, mehamaan woh mere dil ke.kyaa apni tamanaa thi, kya saamane aayaa hai

Taqdeer ka fasana - Sehara

This is a superb song by Md. Rafi, I think its one those rare songs sung in different pitches: slow & then highnotes, there is very less music in this song -most of it is a ear [heart] piercing shahnai tune - I truly believe that only Rafisaab could sing this song  tum to raho salaamat, sehara tumhe mubarak, mera har ek aansun, dene lagaa duaayen, is dil me jal rahi hain, armaan ki chitayen

Agar bewafa tujko pehchaan jaate -Raat Ke Andhere Mein

.khuda ki kasam hum mohabbat na karte, jo maloom hota yeh anjaam-e-ulfat to dil ko lagane ki jurrat na karte Besides, Rafisaab, this song with different wordings is also sung by Lata. I often wonder how hero-heroines end up singing the same song - in different locations or situations? shayad isko hi Love Telepathy kehte hain. jo ham par hai gujari hami jaante hai, sitam kaun sa hai nahi jo uthaya, nigahon mein phir bhi rahi teri surat, har ek saans mein tera paigaam aayaa

Dil jo naa kah sakaa wohi raaz-e-dil kahane ki raat aayi -Bheegee Raat

I absolutely adore this song & the mostly urdu words which were turned in magic once Rafisaab sings for the handsome Pradeep Kumar, who is at his lover Meena Kumari’s wedding. Being the perfect gentleman that he is our hero rues:taubaa ye kisne anjuman sajaa ke, Tukade kiye hain guncha-e-vafaa ke, uchhaalo gulon ke tukade, ke rangin fizaaon mein rehane ki raat aayi & at the sametime blesses his beloved: chaliye mubaarak ye jashn dostii kaa, daaman to thaamaa aap ne kisii ka, hamen to khushi yahii hai, tumhe bhi kisi ko apana kehne ki raat aaye

Kya se kya ho gaya -Guide

I think this song had some sort of stereo or echo funda which made it sound so different & ofcourse, once again it was Dev Anand’s regular favourite Raafisaab singing for him, dejected at being jilted by his lover: tere mere dil ke beech ab toh sadiyon ke faasle hain, yakeen hoga kisi ki hum tum ek raah sang chale hain, hona hain aur kya bewafaa tere pyaar mein

Pathar ke Sanam Tujhe Humne - Pathar Ke Sanam

I like this song from the time we used watched chayageet on tv [Good Ol’ days]. Manoj Kumar looked so handsome & the songwords are catchy, remember them even till date. As with all his songs, this one also sung with the same passion by Rafisaab:

Chingari Koi Bhadke -Amar Prem

Don’t wonder whether this song fits in the tragic class, just read the words:*ham se mat pucho kaise mandir tuta sapno ka, logon ki baat nahin hai yeh kissa hai apno ka, koi dushman thes lagae to miit jiya bahalae; manmiit jo ghaav lagaae use kaun mitaye? if a loved one inflicts the wound, who will erase it? * Haven’t we all being let down by our own’close’ people?

Khilaunaa jaanakar tum to, meraa dil to.D jaate ho -Khilona

This Rafi song gives me goosebumps, the film & this song situation was disturbing, add to this the excellent acting by Sanjeev Kumar & what one gets see/hear is a mentally ill hero begging his heroine not to abandon him & wait with him for some more time. as it is he has just a few more days to live: * mere dil se na lo badala zamaane bhar ki baaton ka, Thehar jaao suno mehamaan hoon main chand raaton ka, chale jaanaa abhi se kis liye muh mod jaate ho

Zindagi ka safar, hain yeh kaisa safar -Safar

Am sure this song would be everyone’s favourite, some or the other time, it’s not necessary to be a dying man like Rajesh Khanna to ponder over these paheli’s of life, here Kishore’yoodleeyo’ Kumar turns sober to churn out this alltime famous song: zindagi ko bahot pyaar humne kiya, rote rote zamane mein aaye magar hanste hanste zamane se jaayenge hum, jayenge par kidhar hai kise ye khabar.koi samajhaa nahi koi jaana nahi snif snif:(

Zindagii ke safar mein gujar jaate hain jo makaam -Aapki Kasam

phul khilate hai, log milate hai magar, patajhad mein jo phul murajhaa jaate hain, woh baharon ke aane se khilate nahin Many a lessons learnt from this meaningful song, soulfully sung by Kishor Kumar.

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein: Kabhi Kabhi

.khayaal aata hai ki jaise tujhko banaaya gaya hai mere….ki jaise tu mujhe chahegi umar bhar yun hi.main jaanta hun ki tu gair hai magar yun hi Mukesh sings this lovely song where even though he [Amitabh] knows that his first love isn’t his now, he just cannot help but wonder if she would love him like whole life. yun hi

yeh kya jagah hai doston, ye kaun saa dayar hai -Umrao Jaan

I always preferred Asha Bhonsle’s fun songs & with this song she has proved that she too can match the caliber of her didi. This is my fav Asha song ye kis mukaam par hayaat, mujhako leke aa gayi, na bas khushi pe kahan, na gham pe ikhtiyaar hai

Aye ajnabi tu bhi kabhi awaaz de kahin se -Dil Se

I like all the songs from this movie but this one in particular coz it has a lovely beat & ofcourse, the super cool wordings: *roj roj resham si hava aate-jaate kehati hai bata.woh jo dhudh dhuli masoom kali, woh roshani kahan, woh jaansi kahan hai.main adhura tu adhuri ji rahi hai
