It doesn't get Purpler

Deep Purple, popularly known as DP is a british progressive rock band. Metal Music, a sub-genre to Rock, is something where the guitars and the drums sound like Metals. Despite their claims that they do not target to make Metal Music in particular. But several Metal-artists cite the influence of this band for their songs. An astonishing fact is that as many as 55 cover albums, which includes 135(approx.) cover songs, have been made which include Deep Purple’s songs. That in itself speaks of DP’s success in the music industry.

*The Line Up*

Ritchie Blackmore - lead guitar

Ian Gillan - vocals

Roger Glover - bass guitar

Jon Lord - organ, keyboards

Ian Paice - drums

*My list*

*1. Smoke On The Water *

*Album:** Machine Head Without any doubt one of the best works of Deep Purple. Released in the year 1971 this song has ruled the Rock world for over 35 years. And will continue to rule for another century.

Smoke on the water

fire in the sky

*2. Hush *

*Album:** Shades Of Deep Purple, When We Rock We Rock

Catchiest https://lyrics. Still Better when it is sung by Ian Gillan(vocals). Extremely sorry I am unable to control my excitement so I am writing down a part of the lyrics

Thought I heard her calling my name now

Hush, hush

She broke my heart but I love her just the same now

Hush, hush

Thought I heard her calling my name now

Hush, hush

I need her loving and I’m not to blame now

*3. Lazy *

*Album:** Machine Head.

The song might not seem as fluid in the beginning. The song, I think were made when the band was lazing out. The initial 1/2 minute was like’The same thing is going on. Hey is something wrong with my ear.’ As soon as you know it you get to listen to one of the best Guitar solo’s ever. Probably should have been an instrumental but it involves a few lines as lyrics to give Ian Gillan some work to do.

*4. Black Night *

*Album:** The very Best Of Deep Purple.

Listen to Ian Gillan at his best. He seems all worked up for the song. Plus in the original studio record it is said that Ian himself played the guitar as he was the one composing the song.

Black night is not right,

I don’t feel so bright,

I don’t care to sit tight.

*5. Woman From Tokyo *

*Album:** Who Do We Think We Are.

I, sometimes, fail to understand the purpose of the lyrics in this song.I mean With instruments making such great impact whats the need for a brilliant https://lyrics.

*6. Speed King *

*Album:** Deep Purple In Rock(Sometimes refered as’In Rock’)

’Ritchie Blackmore’ tells us how to do it all. One of the cathiest music indeed. *I’m a speed king you go to hear me sing I’m a speed king see me fly

*7.Strange Kind Of Woman *

*Album:** Fire Ball

Another gem. There was a theory floating around that after a great album DP releases a not-so-great-album. But DP proved all these theories wrong by releasing the album Fireball after the album’In Rock’ which by normal standards is considered as one of the best efforts of Deep Purple and Blackmore.

*8. Burn *

*Album:** Burn Another rocking song.

Listen this one for the awesome Keyboard(Jon Lord) and bass(Roger Glover) works

*9. Perfect Strangers *

*Album:** Perfect Strangers

Great song. What can I say. One of the best ever. Listen to the last part(last one minute) of the song with the guitar solo. This song, I think, gives us an insight to what people later would call - Metal music. If you are unable to appriciate this song(after listening to it) then god alone help you! BTW you need to listen to Iron Maiden’s and Dream Theater’s cover on this song(It was sung by IM and DT together during ozzfest)

*10. Child In Time *

*Album:** Deep Purple In Rock, When We Rock We Rock

I haven’t heard a more balanced song ever. Starts off slow - gathers up pace midway through the song and then decelerates in the end. The song is a bit long(10 min) for only 5 lines of https://lyrics. But the true joy is while listening to the solo’s and stuff.

Warning: Don’t listen to the last 40 seconds of the song in front of others. You might be embarrassed in front of others.

*11. Knocking At Your Back Door *

*Album:** Perfect Strangers

*12. Space Trukin’ *

*Album:** Machine Head

Lets Go Space Truckin’and be prepared to listen to the magicians at work.

*13. Highway Star *

*Album:** Machine Head

Known for the organ solo(Jon Lord) the song is also charecterised by some classical Guitar solo’s. A must listen.

*14. The Bird Has Flown *

*Album:** The Very Best Of Deep Purple, Deep Purple

Well, what can I say! Whenever I feel mentally deranged or upset by something I listen to this song.Listen to this song for the guitars and the drums which are fast-paced and dragging at the same time. The drums(played by Ian Paice) play an important part in this song. One of the best DP song in my opinion.

*15. Fireball *

*Album:** Fireball

Jon Lord is generally known for his organ works but in this song he has given us his best with the keyboards.

*16. Demon’s Eye *

*Album:** Fireball, Shades Of Deep Purple.

*17. Kentucky Woman *

*Album:** The Book of Taliesyn

This song is from second album released in 1969, considered by many as a not so great album. But take my word for it you might not regret having listened to this song.

Kentucky woman,

she shines in her own kind light

Oh she looks at you once in a day

and what’s wrong is alright And I love her!

Yes I do! I love her!

*18. Hey Joe *

*Album:** Shades Of Deep Purple

This was the album which started it all. This song was the one that gave us the forethought of what was to come and what we regularly need to expect from DP.

*19. A Gypsy’s Kiss *

*Album:** Perfect Strangers

Another gem from the album Perfect Strangers.

*20. Hallelujha *

*Album:** Greatest Hits, Singles A’s and B’s.

A song with meaning. These two things might seem poles apart. But its not the case with DP. The messages in Deep Purple’s songs may not be as cryptic as in case of Pink Floyd. They, are infact simple to understand and employ.

I am a spokesman

for a better way of living

Love is the word

and it can be heard

If you are young the message can be sung

*PS** I had thought of writing a review on any one of Deep Purple’s album but then I thought it might not do justice to all of their works. So thats what made me write this review.
