Peace, love, empathy - 2

  • Caution

This is not a review on Worst 20 songs .This is in continuation to my Top 20 English songs review.I crossed my word limit there so continuing the same here.

Two Steps Behind(Def Leppard)

Def Leppard emerged in the era of the so called New Wave Of British Heavy Metal sound with killer riffs and pounding rhythms.Graduated from’Deaf Leopard’ to’Def Leppard’ coz didn’t want to attract punk fans(who would visit the band just because the word’Leopard’ appeared in the name) and disappoint them.’Two Steps Behind’ from their hits album Vault is my all time favorite(Its a magic running through your soul). It is featured on the soundtrack to the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Last Action Hero(The song is played during the closing credits). Strangely these guys have never won a grammy award.

Jeremy(Pearl Jam)

Guys from 3 different bands come together to start Pearl Jam, thats what is great about this band.Eddie Vedder, the lead vocalist has one of the most unique voices in any band today.Ten was the album which brought attention to the band.’Jeremy’, a song in here is based on a true happened story. When Eddie wrote the song he gave Jeremy more background than was known in real. As you can read in the lyrics, he makes you think that the only reason for the suicide was that his parents never showed interest in him. But the known facts don’t exclude other possibilities.

Seventh Son of A Seventh Son(Iron Maiden)

Well won’t write much in here, check out my other reviews on Maiden.’Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son’ is an excellent theme album. On this album, we follow the life of a very special child. A child who was’Born of Woman the seventh son . And he in turn of a seventh son . He has the power to heal .He has the gift of seventh sight . He is the chosen one.’ The Album encompasses the life of this child from birth to death and all the stages in between, the story of how his powers grew rapidly, nearly driving him mad.He could see the future, no one would believe him, and then they would blame him when his predictions came true.On top of this he had the powers of Good and Evil battling for his soul and thus his powers. A must possession for all maiden fans.

Money For Nothing(Dire Straits)

To me Mark Knopfler seems to be the most competent man in the world. The albums he wrote and produced for his band, Dire Straits, sold millions of copies - their appeal based on Knopfler’s voice, Knopfler’s guitar, and Knopfler’s songs. Initially’Brothers in Arms’ didn’t sound like an album which was going to storm the barricades of global popular taste. And there lay the surprising beauty of it, where others shouted this album talked. My best is’Money for Nothing’ where Knopfler sings as a bigoted appliance store clerk, the song also has Sting singing the catchy’I want my MTV’ refrain. The video of the same incorporates hi-tech computer graphics, with the redrawn footage of the band .

Estranged(GnR)

Different from their earlier albums, On’Use your Illusions 1 & 2’  there are sitars, mandolins and other exotic influences here, there and everywhere. When these two albums reached the stores all over the world, GnR was the first rock artist who had released two separate albums on the same day. The albums debuted as number one and two on the Billboard charts.’Estranged’ is a pretty long number(9:20) which features on Illusions 2.The Video too is nicely shot and I guess it qualifies for the longest music video. On the album cover u can see Axl has thanked Slash for the’Killer guitar melodies’ on this song, u see there has to be something in the song.

Hotel California(Eagles)

Eagles’ claim to fame was that they brought country and western music to the popular listening audience. They gained recognisation for easy guitars and soft rock music. Album Hotel California was released to the complete enjoyment of critics and the public alike.Obviously the most recognized song on the album, ’Hotel California’ is an outstanding commentary on Southern California life in the mid-70’s, and includes what the best and most emotional solo in any song ever written. Again when’Hell Freezes Over’ was released in’94 it produced a huge response from Eagles fans across the world .The most-talked about song on the album is the acoustic version of Hotel California, which is a poor substitute for the electric original(many people feel differently). It does have a great intro, but the acoustic solo doesn’t have the feel of the original.

Dry County(Bon Jovi)

Being one of the most popular bands of the past years, Bon Jovi is known to many of us.On the Album Keep The Faith, ’Dry County’ has to be set apart. This song is probably the most serious work from the band, and it is, without a doubt the longest one(9 glorious minutes). In no other song Jon aboard a theme with this characteristics and in very few Richie finds so much space to show that his virtue with the guitar in his hands has very few limits. We find a man who gets a loan in his life to plant his land, but the drought stops him to keep on dreaming and the ruin that has gotten into his life and makes him dispair.

Only God Knows Why(KidRock)

Here comes the one and only Pimp of the Nation, the man known and loved as Kid Rock. 2 years back, Rock released’Devil Without A Cause’. At first, the album was not the platinum selling classic that it is today .I listen to his music for a good beat and a catchy tune, not for some social and moral messages. The ballad’Only God knows why’ is a great rock ballad, it disguises any real sadness and hiding it with anger, which is really cool. Perhaps the most striking thing about KidRock is the almost-effortless way with blending sounds and styles.

Tears in Heaven(Eric Clapton)

Maybe he’s not god, but he’s doggone good.I’m sure Clapton won’t need an introduction for any rock fan.The song, ’Tears in Heaven’ is one of Eric’s greatest songs ever written. Eric was dealt with a cruel blow when Conor, his son deceased.Clapton channeled his shattering grief into writing the heart-wrenching tribute to his son. It’s terrible that it took Conor’s death and Eric’s grief to write such a beautiful song. The song can be found on the album Unplugged, for which Clapton was loaded with Grammys. Like* Suyog*, I too wasn’t able to relate to the song in the real sense till I lost one of my closest pal.

L. A. Woman(Doors)

The band took its name from the poet William Blake, who had written, ’When the doors of perception are cleansed, things will appear to man as they truly are.infinite.’ Jim himself was fond of saying, ’there are things known and things unknown and in between are The Doors.’ LA Woman from the Self titled album is my Doors favourite.Mr. Mojo makes his appearance in the song -(Mr. Mojo Risin’, Mr. Mojo Risin’ Got to keep on risin’). It’s a perfect Anagram. Re-arrange the letters and it spells `Jim Morrison’.I Bet u did not know it, thanx Crazydude for the info.

Well here’s it all started .
