Are you the one who looks only for a light entertainer and no serious movies? Stop reading here. Thank you. This movie is not for you. U Me Aur Hum is a fine cinema which takes one to a story which makes you enjoy, think, astonish, wonder and all the more entertain in a higher level.
“Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people" says the film, at its end. Human mind is a very complex one to understand. Some times it is easy to communicate with anothers mind where at times even after continuous perusal we will not be able to convey a simple message. A husband and wife staying together, sleeping together and sharing all the intimate moments in their life may not be able to understand one others mind. Another person who is quite new to an individual may understand it easily. Some times it can be mental blockades, our pre-occupation, lacks of ability or will to express. We always complain about our partners, family members and friends that they dont understand us. What if we are blocked from the basic conditioning of past events to think on the relation we are in? How we will maintain our relation in those conditions then? We ignore our blessing on today to understand others and pretend we do not understands, where the fact is that we are not ready to give away our stubbornness. The film will make you think.
Pia (Kajol) was a supplier in a cruise ship in which Ajay (Ajay Devgan) traveled with one unhappy doctor couples Nikhil (Sumeet Raghavan)/ Reena (Divya Dutta) and happily unmarried partners Vicky (Karan Khanna) and Natasha (Isha Sharwani). Love at first sight from Ajay didnt make any positive reaction in brave Pia. Ajay peeped in to her small notebook called My book of possibilities. Ajay then try to fulfill her little ambitions and wishes and tried himself to fit to the like of Pia. They fall in love. The relation shook by a tide before interval but they are now happily married. A new villain comes in the form of Alzheimers (a disease which make one forget things of past and relations. The end of this disease is death). U Me Aur Hum is all about the ship of relation between Ajay and Pia sail through the turbulent sea conditions of life. The story is mostly shot on a ship….the name of the ship is not shown and I wish to name it as Line Cruiser Relation.
The story is said to be absorbed from the film THE NOTEBOOK (2004) which inspired a Malayalam release Tanmathra (Mohalal in the lead and as the Alzheimers patient). This is the bollywood version of it, well changed to fit to the conditions.
Ajay Devgan, the debutant director rocks big time with UMAH. Simply superb!! The plot handled with maturity without losing the strength. Brilliant screen play and dialogues (filled with thoughts, jokes, emotions or incidents) are of top class quality. The director also utilized the best of his cast and technical crew to make it as a masterpiece. The courage and confidence the debutant shown is praiseworthy.
While presenting the story with all its seriousness, there are a good number of jokes shared and funny moments captured. Each funny moment has a connection with a serious shot and the balancing act is done wonderfully. The dialogues were too good and deliver with a punch. The most witty dialogue was, if all woman are like alcohol, all men are like a mouse looking for a hole which created an uproar of laughter in the theatre. Dialogues, jokes, stories there are supplements to keep the balance from getting things more serious. Efforts of Sutanu Gupta, Akash Khurana, Robin Bhatt (script writers) and Ashwini Dheer, (Dialogue) worth special mention.
Ajay Devgan gave a splendid performance where Kajol prove again herself and brought the good old days back for her and for bollywood. The two couples (Sumeet Raghavan, Divya Dutta, Karan Khanna, and Isha Sharwani) played the supporting roles very well. The Director Ajay deserves all applauds for this.
Music was brilliant and well fit to the mood of the film and situations. I liked the song Jee le the most and U Me Aur Hum the next. Choreography was very good where a western touch is given. Colourful and glamorous at the same time support the plot.
Cinematography is perfect. I will say the cinematographer did more than one may expect from a film like this. Those blue seas…sea gulls over the sea and ship…white background shots…I can write on and on about the cinematography but I will limit by saying Quality which shows. Well done, Aseem Bajaj!
The movie has few drawbacks like the editing could have been better. The 2.40 hrs movie could have easily trimmed a bit to make it more crispy. The relation between the unhappy couples is dragged without much villain. It is funny to see the director solve the same question time again rightly and try to solve it again. The scene where Pia misses the number to call is a compromise where the possibility of storing the number is not considered. But I will say I not my rating for an inch for these small mistakes where the pluses are too much to give the full credit.
The movie talks about human mind and touches us on our heart. There are certain breathtaking moments which will definitely shock you. The scene where the child is playing in the water and the dog barking and screaming where Pia look at the lizard catching a fly is the best of the best from the lot. The best moment to shock you in recent bollywood outing.
It is only a coincidence that the other release of the week Krazzy4 too deal with mental problems and cast Juhi Chawla a veteran. Another similarity is Ashwini Dheer. A line from krazzy 4 states that we have to experience each moment of our life. To understand this sentences full meaning, watch UMAH. Enjoy each moment of life. Today it is there with you. Tomorrow is uncertain. Live today happily and try to understand each other. Both films are enjoying good collections. I managed to watch this film in my 4th attempt.
Guys, go to the movie with an open mind where it talks about the distance we have to travel to reach other mind. While we live in our bonus days we think bonus is our right. Only when we find that it is a charity we realize its value. A must watch film!!!
