While I was watching U Me aur Hum ( snazzy!!! title, BTW ) I had the same questions in my mind whenever I watch a bollywood flick ( ok ...... not all movies though , some I just shut up and enjoy them that is if they are really good or if they are shitty . I just wait till I finish my popkorn and other snacks and beverages )
why do our movies need songs ? ok, so some movies do need songs and they do add to the narrative or thats what bollywood wants us to believe
secondly, why do our movies keep reminding us of movies we have seen before ? ok agreed its impossible to be completely original
why are our movies so friggin long ? which kinda answers my first two questions .... Haaaaaaaaa .......
allthough I must confess I had these questions only during the first half of this movie the second half though is compelling ’coz it made me just shut up and enjoy the movie and admire its brilliance not that there were not many brilliant moments in the first half ..... just that there were few , I will tell you why ..... lets face it..... this is not ajay and kajol’s first movie together or individually so then why do we have to know about them falling in love ? and that too love at first sight ? hmmmmmmmmm now thats a little too much ..... dont you think ? secondly, havent we seen ajay and kajol fall in love in their first successful outing at the B.O ( read "Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha ", which was an engrossing rip-off of "French Kiss")These questions aside U Me aur Hum is a commendable effort and gives us a sneak peak at Vishal’s (Ajay’s original real name ) brilliance as a director in the second half and in the visuals of the first half.allthough I think ajay was just plain lazy in the first half and was hoping that he could re-create the same magic .... by merely copying those scenes .... infact some of the scenes are so similar that it looks laboured ..... for ex , the scene in the bar ..... reminds us of the scene on the flight ( in "Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha"where they meet for the first time …. Only here they meet on a cruise ….
Surprise …!!! Surprise….!!!_) I mean HELLO ...!!! that was 1998 and this is 2008 ..... Thankfully
though the second half has none of that (Sorry !!! I am not gonna reveal the second half …. ‘Coz
this is exactly why you should see the movie ) infact we must applaud Mr.Devgan
for attempting something new ( within
the confines of main stream bollywood i.e, ) and surprising us …. Quite frankly I
thought I was going to see a romantic movie … with the same spiel …. But Mr.Devgan threw a
bouncer at me …… ok I am not gonna say
much about the second half as I promised not to reveal the plot in the second
half .
Now, lets consider the film’s merits, shall we ? Firstly
Mr.Devgan please take a bow …. For your first directorial venture … for the
idea of the movie gets a ….. BEEEEEEG …. Thumbs UP!!! Secondly,
the Visuals in the first half are breathtaking ….. infant camera work is bang on through out the
film and the fact that it was shot on a cruise makes it sone pe suhaaga ....tsk .... tsk …. Ok , now lets get to the cast
and crew …. Kajol ( The Resident Queen
of Spontaneity and Fire on-screen ) as
always does not disappoint us ( allthough she is slightly shrill in her outburst scenes) … infact , she surprises us by taking on a different role this time as opposed to her
usual girl next door , romantic lead role …. Her brave attempt is hopefully a
sign of things to come ….. and we all love seeing Kajol on screen don’t we ? ….
Ajay as we all know is a competant actor …. Although his forte is intense-brooding
roles or Silent- bad guy roles……
and quite frankly he does not
disappoint us in this movie …..
Among the supporting cast only Sumit raghavan is worth
mentioning …..
Ok , Now let me conclude by giving my final rating …. Any guesses?...... ok guys
its 3 and a half …. Two for the second half
and one and a half for a brave new idea ….. Looking forward to more such brave outings

Mr.Devgan is in desperate need of a manicure , possibly a pedicure and also a
very good moisturizer for his face or
better botox …. I am sure he has enough money to get the best of people to do
this for him
Kajol needs to call
up Kareena to find out her cosmetic surgeons’ number …. I mean if Kareena can
look like that after Liposuction …. I am sure Kajol can look much better … Also
she needs
to ask Kareena for her Spa’s number as kajol needs her under-arm to be waxed and …. NOW!!! And oh
yes before I forget she needs to ask Kareena for her Stylists’ number aswell
Vishal Bharadwaj ... Sir, this is not a movie about a boring Billo Rani Dance Bar .... it is set on a lavish Cruise ....
and Ms..Isha Sherwani and her beau ’s ( MR. Lehnga
Choli) histrionics in the movie is as bad as their good looks ..... fortunately MR. Choli Daaman or was it Lehnga Choli ..... ( JEEZ .... !!! Now, i am getting confused) gets a second prize for being a wooden door knob ... I mean , second only to John Abraham .... Dont Knock Knock please Mr.Chole bature or wait ... is it Mr.Choli Ke peeche kya hai ..... ? fortunately again .... its not Mr.Aditya Puns-Choli.
lastly though Mr. Devgan should thank Mohammed Ali ( that is if you get the drift .... ) maybe his next directorial outing woulb be a movie based on Ali’s sajourn with boxing .... Amen to that :)
