What a disaster....

The problem with Umar is that the story is old fashioned .That is why it looks completely out of place . Even this drawback could’ve been overlooked had the subject been treated with care. But in this case, the direction leaves a lot to be desired. Neither does the drama hold your attention after a point, nor does the thrilling portions appeal. The amateurish handling of the subject and a humdrum screenplay are its biggest culprits!

Director and writer inspired by Baghban. Nothing wrong with being inspired by something that has been tried [and succeeded] earlier, but Umar has nothing new to offer in terms of presentation as well. In fact, the film comes across as a very poor cousin of Baghban.

The film falters primarily because a predictable story has been stretched for two-and-a-half hours. The twists and turns in the film are anything but exciting , while the emotions fall flat completely. You just don’t feel or empathize with any of the characters. The film also fails to grip the viewer because too many songs have been crammed in the proceedings. In fact, the story stagnates in the post-interval portions and what one gets to see are songs and more songs. And by the time the film reaches its climax, you’ve actually guessed what the finale would be like.

Director Razdan has handled a few dramatic sequences well, but he ought to know that mere remaking a hit film like Baghban is no guarantee that the audiences would take to it as well. Music is average. Cinematography is just about okay.

Jimmy tries hard to infuse life in his character. Satish , Prem , Kader does their part convincingly. Shenaaz has her moments.

On the whole, Umar is a weak fare in all respects. At the box-office, its survival seems bleak.
