Umrao Jaan: Remake not upto mark

This exactly is not one of my kind of movie. I had been hearing a lot about Rekha starrer Umrao Jaan of 80’s over last few days and that prompted me to watch the film

I only liked the initial part of the movie, which covered the song Salaam.., introduction of Abhishek Bachchan, and a few of his starting dialogues. However soon the movie became boring and characters failed to keep pace with seriousness of the story. In fact the appearances were not matching the backdrop in which the movie was presented. Ashwarya Rai’s face and expressions were looking too polished and artificial for this role. It would have been better if director had chosen a lesser known face. Abhishek Bachchan was good in the initial part, but there after he looked more of Buntee than Sultan of Lucknow. His style and presentation hardly matched any of the older Nawabs. Sunil Shetty still did a better job. In his brief role he looked much closer to a Nawab of older times.

Its strange that movie hardly had any notable dances except the initial song. The music is quite poor and is no way near the older version. Overall movie was quite short of expectations that were created by hype around it. It would be better to watch older version
