The fifth film in the Underworld franchise is now in theaters, meaning that Kate Beckinsale is back in action as Selene. Her character is a Vampire death dealer who who is still fighting the Lycan clan. Its the first film in the franchise since 2012s Underworld: Awakening, which was filmed in 3D. Its also the first film directed by Anna Foerster, who is best known for her work with Roland Emmerich and directing episodes of Outlander.
Its surprising that the franchise has lasted as long as it has. The films have made a combined $500.6 million worldwide and none of them have grossed $100 million domestically. The highest-grossing film in the franchise is Awakening, which made $62.3 million in North America and $80.9 million in foreign territories. The franchise has also been hit hard by critics. The new movie has just a 10 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kate Beckinsale has been the star of all five films. She made her film debut in 1993s Much Ado About Nothing. In 2016, she starred in the acclaimed Love & Friendship, which earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Gotham Independent Film Awards. ( Getty)
