Few Good Men in Indian Cinema ..

Although I keep an open mind when it comes to the

characters sketched by the author’s/Script writers

in Indian Cinema..I have some personal choices..

And would like to share with you some ’’male Characters’’

who didn’t have to do ’’dhishum dhishum’’.. or

show their muscle’s to be admired..and none of my

favourite characters drank himself to death !

List goes this way ..in random order :)

a) GUIDE:

RAJU GUIDE played by the inimitable ’’Devsaab’’ directed

by Vijay Anand and written by ’’R.K.Narayan’’, a great

male Character to play onscreen, who falls in love with

a Married women, rescues her from her ’’going nowhere marriage’’

and pursues her to go for the dreams that she cherished.

Encourages her in every part of her ’’dreams’’, In this

process defies the entire ’’samaj-Society’’... but this romance

ends with a tragedy for this Character..

I loved Devsaab, when he gets caught in the ’’nakli signature’’

case .. (he signs the papers since he doesn’t want to loose

Waheeda Rehman urf Rosy) and in the hope that she will understand

he comes to talk to her.. but she doesn’t ..and the dialogue

delivery.. ’’Mai samjhata tha .. koi samjhe na samjhe .. Rosy

zaroor samajh jayegi.. magar meri samajh bhi kitni na-samajh

nikali’’..

b) ANAND:

Both Babu Moshai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Anand (Rajesh Khanna)

Lived these characters and made them ’’AMAR’’..

I have never seen (and cannot expect to see) a Entry, so lively,

so effective, so Full of Life, as of Rajesh Khanna’s entry in this movie.

That Dialogue of ’’kakaji urf Rajesh Khanna’’ when he visits

Seema Deo his ’’mu-Boli Sister’’ ...

’’Mai tumhe kya aashirwad du bahena ..yeh bhi tou nahi kahe

sakta .. ke tujhe meri umar lag jaye’’ .. still brings a lump in

my throat

’’Anand .. mara nahi .. Anand kabhi Marte nahi’’ .. wow..

thats the reason this amazing, evergreen, never say die attitude

character is listed here .. just for the spirit of which Rajesh Khanna

lived it

c) MILI:

Amitabh Bachchan was/is always great when showing silent

anger on screen.. nobody will and can show that silent anger

any more..

Just to side-track from this topic, would like to define..

this ’’silent anger’’ more clearly.. In one movie MadanPuri

or Amrish Puri is in the restroom washing his face..and

Amitabh comes inside and closes the door .. you should

agree with me that ’’The Janta’’ knew very well whats going

to happen to Amrish Puri next hehehe ..

But in this Amitabh hiding his past running from one apartment

to another for getting some kind of ’’shanti’’ in his life..

gets confronted with the most talkative girl ’’Jaya Bachchan’’

and falls in love with her and stays along with her even when

she is detected with cancer..

d) SADMA:

KAMAL HASAN, plays a very gentle soul who helps a retarded

women (played exceptionally by Sridevi) gives her all the

love - care - attention required in the world..

When she recovers, she totally forgets him .. he desperately

runs behind her train .. and she throws a Bread Slice towards

him .. thinking he is a beggar .. most heartrending moments

of Cinema..

e) AMAR PREM:

RAJESH KHANNA in a bengali costume and a cheerful smile on his

face, plays this character with so ease .. sharing a ’’cannot

define’’ relationship with Sharmila Tagore..

’’Ro mat Pushpa .. I hate tears pushpa’’ who can say that in such

style .. nobody .. nowadays no star has a identity like

in those days .. hehe mimicry artist’s have no more challenges

left to mimic..

f) ARTH:

RAJ KIRAN is it surprise to add him here ? I dont think

so .. since I loved his character in this movie and the

expressions that he brought on while cutting that Birthday

cake of Shabana Azmi .. with a CLASSIC SONG..

’’Tum Itna jo Muskura Rahe ho’’.. Again an ’’unselfish’’

broadminded ’’male’’ character.. which I admire ..

g) HERA-PHERI:

PARESH RAWAL.. he played this character to the ’’TEE’’

The Marathi accent, the walk, the way he wore that ’’Chashma’’

and then with all that comedy going all around.. comes

a ultimate ’’Sad’’ scene .. where all the three characters

share their ’’DUKH’’.. and Paresh Rawal says..

’’Mera bhi ek sapna hai ..apne Baap ka saara Karza chukake..

woh Bahar mast khursi daal.. Sir uppar karke baithne ka’’

h) SAARANSH:

ANUPAM KHER.. played a old man who lost his only son and

struggling to go on with his life, even decides to commit suicide

with his wife (played by Rohini Hattangadi).

Who can forget that scene, where Anupam kher enters the

customs officers office and says

’’main yahan TV lene nahi aaya hun, mujhe mere Bete ki

asthiyan chahiye.. Ek baap ko apne Bete pe itna Haq hai

ya nahi’’ in one word to describe this character

’’MINDBLOWING’’.

i) DADDY:

Again ANUPAM KHER.. played a very renowned singer, who

later becomes a ’’alcoholic’’ after his disastrous marriage

and gets ashamed to come in front of his daughter

(Played by Pooja Bhatt).. How he overcomes his craving

for alcohol.. and regains his ’’respect’’ back in his daughters

eyes is worth a 1000 watch !!

j) KABHI KABHI:

SHASHI KAPOOR. played a charming husband of Rakhi

(who has a past love affair with Amitabh bachchan)

and he accepts it with such a grace .. and charm and

says ’’Meri Biwi tou hai he itni sundar .. ke College ke saare

ladke marte honge’’ .. he just feels sad that his wife

didn’t share her past with him..

k) JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR:

AAMIR KHAN.. urf Sanjay urf munna played so well

a model college ka chokra .. his transformation from

an unresponsible, immature school boy to a mature

Sanjay Lal was just classic .. in that one beautiful song

’’Rooth ke Humse kabhi, Jab chale jaoge Tum’’

You might be having your own personal fav male characters

which are sketched and brought alive on screen by some

superb performances.. I hope you find one of them in

my list too.. thanks for reading.
