Bought the 1242cc petrol version in 1999 when there were no other spacious hatchbacks around the country and loved it.
Basically we were looking for anything more spacious than the 800ccs and zens around at that time, none of which me and my wife - both around 5 7" tall liked sitting in or driving. And this was our first and only car.
We already knew then that this would be a purchase we would have to "live with" as we were already warned, and though we have "slight regrets" every time it breaks down, we look at the fuel bill, or at the resales price:) we still love it when we drive it around the city.
Our requirement was mainly city driving, with the occasional outing - we have already done 70000 kms with several trips to baroda, pune etc and the car has been lovely. It seems to have a knack of breaking down only in the city:) which is fine since though parts are expensive now labour is cheap and easy to find. Regular tools can be used to repair.
The time we appreciated the car the most was in 2001 when driving back from panvel at night, we crashed at high speed into a road divider with family in the car. Although the right wheel and suspension was totalled, we were amazed by how the car didnt budge from the road and just held its ground safely with all the trucks zooming in behind us. This was a lifesaver and we knew it.
The low clearance though cursed at other times, was a major factor in stability, and we just love the spaciousness of the boot. Also this was one of the first cars whos seat completely folds up leaving the entire back free - in fact we even used it to move our precious goods when we shifted house from Kandivli to Andheri!
Its a shame Fiat then managed to screw up its reputation with lousy service and quality - because it could have really built on its loyal customer base back then.
We believe, the ford fusion would be the only best upgrade for us now - but thats a similar story isnt it - not a "popular" buy - not too many numbers selling - really a drivers car - poor resale value.
But we are going to do that anyway after the rains, and then just listen to what our relatives and friends say:)
