Okay, It was a movie from gautam menon and I expected a baseline to be met. After watching VA, I think it is time to redefine the baseline( negatively of course).
What was GM thinking when he wrote such a script? The Tribute to his father thing is absolutely fine, but why did the move travel in so many directions, why was it so lengthy, y so many logical flaws? So many questions arose in my mind after watching this movie.
Here is a tale( note it, can even be called a fairy tale) of a Commando, narrating how his father stood with him and gave him the strength of Vaaranam Ayiram(1000 elephants). I only hope I had a father like that or I only hope to have a life like that.
We have this father proposing to his wife( in typical GM fashion) through others, and with the usual one song, family grows mantra brings the Son Surya to the world and promises to make his life the best.
Here is the father who supports his son to bash up a guy and who encourages him to sing and be free during his school time. The same father encourages his son to get into a college, continue singing and be free. He also encourages his son to pursue the girl whom he met in a train( doesnt even know who that person is). HIGHLIGHT here is a father who asks his non earning son, to go to the US, stay there for close to three months to woo a gal. Money grows on tree!, sply given the fact that son surya talks abt hell lots of loan commitments, both private and throhgh banks with his parents, works himself out for a year, gets a pending house construction completed and still has money for all this?!, Hights of all, the US consulate gives him a VISA despite him stating the real reason for his visit. The guys has no sponsorship letter, has loads of loans and debt, and the consulate trusts his word of mouth, guess INDO US relationships were at their best when this happened. GOD
When the son turns drug addict, this father sends him to J&K for relaxing, where the son suddenly realizes that if you can trust yourself anything is possible, He single handedly takes on an extortion gang( with no guns at all, GOD! again) which prefers to fight with swords. I guess this gang is still in Haider Ali times, Sword! GOD!, the son then realizes that he wants to join the armed forces, even tells he has alwasy been thinking about that, but alwasy lazes around, runs behind a gal, what a pursuit of dreams.! Suddenly he says he started going to gym to prepare his body(for wat?) removes his shirts for couple of scenes( all his female fans would have waited till this moment and then left the theater), starts wearing his armed forces uniform and a bit of his NSG operations is shown. Then the movie draws to an end, and here again there is a detailed rescue mission that has been shown.
K, hold on, relax, take a break. If the thing can be such when read, just imagine( or pls do not) how it would have been to view in a theater.
I would like to know, why the military scenes were shown at length at all, just a subtle indication would have been sufficient. Why do our movie heros always have backup heroines, when one dies the other comes into picture and confesses her love( also tells she has always loved him crap).
As mentioned above there are loads of flaws in the movie and the second half is unbearable.
Few positives, SURYAs acting was amazing, sply as a drug addict and as the father. Simran was very good too. Cinematography is fresh and suitable tints to reflect different periods give some visual appeal to the movie. Harris jayarajs music, though very much on his ususal christian carol lines, is worth listening, sply adiye kollude, ethi ethi ethi and nenjukkul peididum mamazhai. Anjalai is heavily inspired from few songs of(kahiye naa, from TAAL, for the beat) and few old tamil songs for the tune.
I may have sounded a bit harsh about the movie. Let me state one thing here, I would give five stars for Kakka Kakka, Vetayadu vilayadu and a four star for pachaikili muthucharam. I like GMs movies that much. This one was way tooooooooo much.
Watch first half and get out of the movie hall, unfortunately you pay for the entire movie
Cheers
