I believe that a movie should be reviewed as the sum of its parts, rather than the good bits and the bad bits. I mean, if a movie has a terrible script but brilliant cinematography, who cares? When you are writing a review, it should answer the fundamental question of whether its worth watching or not.
In Vaastu Shastra, the review can be summed up quite quickly. Its a very scary but somewhat tedious and the climax is lame. Should you watch it? If you can bear to get spooked off your seat and are a Sushmita fan, yes. I adore Sushmita, she s brilliant; but I wish I hadnt watched this movie because it destroyed my night s sleep for me and thus ruined my weekend.
It really succeeds in delivering the spooks, despite some corny stuff with a tennis ball. In fact, thankfully I had worn my glasses instead of contacts, and was able to take them off for part of the movie and watch the action in a bit of a blur which made it possible for me to sit there at all. See this movie with your boyfriend, so you have a hand to hold and comfort during the movie. I had no such luck!
When I got home at night, I was absolutely scared to walk up the stairs by myself. I left the light on in my room to sleep, but due to a cruel twist of fate, the electricity kept switching on n off every five minutes the whole night .. I didnt sleep a wink. Consequently, I was very tired all of next day. Thank God for my golden retriever who got to spend a night indoors; otherwise Id have had a harder time getting through the night.
Sushmita is very good, as always, and has great expressions to show frustrated, scared and sad. The end is lame, which I was quite thankful for, since if this scary movie had a chilling end, I wouldnt have been able to sleep for a week. Last time that happened to me was when I watched The Ring, albeit on DVD; but it spooked me for weeks. Vaastu Shastra spooked me fully during the movie, and for another couple of nights afterwards. Bhoot hadnt spooked me at all
The movie succeeds in delivering spinechills. Maybe all too well since I wish I hadnt watched it!
