Veer-Zaara was a much awaited movie of the year directed by Yash Chopra. As Yash Chopra had been lifting the directorial baton after around six-seven years, it has been a treat for his fans. And Mr Chopra has not disappointed at all. This is one of the best love stories I have seen ...ever.
I had been hearing a lot about the movie from the reviews that this is in bits n pieces the previous creations of him. I refrained from watching it for weeks but after Bride n Prejudice I dont depend upon the reviews much. Finally I read some positive reviews on MouthShut to know the story. Finally I decided to watch the movie. I also had apprehensions about the movie but finally I enjoyed it a lot. So I would suggest dont give the rumours any attention and watch this beautiful movie.
The Plot: The story is about Squadron leader Veer Pratap Singh(Shahrukh) and Zaara Hayat Khan (Priety), and their endless unselfish love for each other , thats why the name Veer-Zaara.
The film starts with SRK singing a song in yellow sarson ke khet and all the beautiful scenery around. The next scene presents a cell in a jail and inside an old, wretched man who is no other than SRK (Veer Pratap Singh). He has been in this Pakistani jail for twenty two years and has no hope of getting freed from the prison.
A young, rookie lawyer Saamia Siddiqui(Rani) took the task to free Veer Pratap Singh on the behest of some human rights organization. She is teased everywhere on being a woman and being in a profession which is considered to a male domain. But still she took the task and decided to meet Veer Pratap Singh known as Qaidi number 786.
The real story begins here. veer told her the story of him and Zaara and the rest of the first half is narrated by veer. So the story goes like this .... Zaara went to India to deposit the ashes of her bebe (Zohra Sehgal) in India, her bebes last wish. The bus by which Zaara was travelling met an accident. Our hero come to rescue the victims and meets Zaara. He accompanies her on her journey and helps her in fulfilling her bebes last wish. Finally he made her to visit his uncles place and enjoy the punjabi hospitality. But during all this they did not realized that they fell in love.
Finally when our Majnoo is going to tell her about his love ... Zaaras fiancé Raza(Manoj Bajpai) appears before them and they leave for their destinations. After this Veer leave his job and go to Pakistan to bring his love to his home. There comes the villain of the movie Raja who gets Veer arrested and convicted of espionage against Pakistan and sent to jail. To save his love and her family from shame and discomfort, Veer shuts his mouth and chooses to be in Pakistans captivity forever. After this the story comes back to the case of Veer. On the first day itself, without any witnesses or proof the Veer is on the verge of losing the case.
But Saamiya decides to go to India to bring Veers uncle(Amitabh) and aunt(Hema) and his identity proofs. Saamiya went to India to finally know that Veers uncle and aunt are dead. Here story takes a U-turn when no other than Zaara appears before her who is in India to fulfill her Veers dream. She brings Zaara to the Pakistan and finally able to win the case. Veer gets aquitted and is sent to India along with Zaara to live happily ever after.
This may seem quite simple when I am dictating the story but you can not ever imagine what this movie is all about, you have to see how deftly Yash ji has narrated the story ... its a hallmark. You will also love it when you see the magic with your eyes ... actually you should feel it with your heart. So get ready to swing in the ocean of emotions ... feel the love ... feel the music ...
There are a lot of plus points of the movie. The plot is very good and is treated beautifully by Yash ji. The cinematography is commendable and you would love the scenery. A very huge plus point of this movie is its music. The music by Madan Mohan is very very good and I think his son has given the best tribute to his father by using his unused compositions. Without lyrics music is without soul and Javed Akhtar ji had given some soulful compositions. The song at the idgaah is one of the best compositions of the movie and and is very close to my heart. This song is filmed in idgaah where Veer meets Zaara in front of her family.
The other songs of the movie which makes this album special are : Do pal ki thi..., Hum to bhai jaise hain, Kyon hawa..., Lo aa gayi Lodi we ..., Main yahan hoon... Acting by all is very good with Rani and Preity coming out exceptionally well. Shahrukh has done justice with the job though I would have liked Amir Khan to be in his place (SRK fans please excuse me). Devya dutta and Kiron Kher has been superb in supporting role. Amitabh ji, Hema ji and Manoj Bajpai has done exceptionally well in their guest appearances.
There are as such no cons in the movie. Some will say slow pace but I think it was slow because of the songs, but I think all the songs are so good you will not notice that. Infact I am very happy to hear such good compositions. There are people who can find loop holes in the plot but they are not worth. So I would suggest just enjoy the movie.
Finally I would give this movie a four out of five and would recommend to watch it in theatres. Remember ... dil se dekho
