I have lived in New England most of my adult life and have traveled extensively through out the New England states. Each has its own beauty and many things of interest to all.
If you have never been to New England the first state that I would recommend it Vermont. I lived there for awhile and to me it is the typical New England, quaint, friendly and much to see and do.
Vermont is noted for its maple sugar industry as well as many dairy farms. The foliage in the fall is the most breath taking I have ever seen and I go there each year to look out over the mountains in their array of golds, reds, oranges and yellows. Just taking time to enjoy the scenery.
If you are a skier Vermont has many ski resorts and I am sure you can find one that would fit your needs perfectly.
Vermont is a very laid back state where not many people are rushing around and they take things at a slower pace so it is a great place to escape to for peace and quiet.
Of course there are many covered bridges which have always fascinated me and looking at them thinking back to when horse drawn buggies was the way to get around just has such a romantic feel to it.
There are many old country stores which I love. The type you read about with a checkerboard set up on a barrel, people chatting with each other, a wood stove burning, and such things as sealing wax and yes even penny candy.
There are candle making factories and show rooms and the scents are marvelous. There are jelly mills ( yes with home made jelly and bread-the aroma is heavenly )For the wicker lover there is basketville with just about anything you can think of made of wicker and I have spent hours in this place.
Also fascinating are the furniture making shops where you can watch the items being made, The potteries, the list is endless.
Located in Bennington is the Grandma Moses museum, the Bennington monument where you can overlook 5 states, the battlefield, the old North church.
There are doll museums for the doll collectors where items can be purchased and side walk cafes for a pleasant lunch not to mention all the many wonderful gift shops where you find very unique gifts from the olden days
There is so much to see and do at any time of the year that it makes a great family vacation and it would take me a book to write about it but if you havent seen New England and plan to then Vermont is a must see for the lovers of the good old days and a simpler life style
