Turmeric Magic

Life without Turmeric?

For me it’s impossible because in India it is used as a spice in almost all eatables ranging from breakfast to dinner. It is not only used in curries but also used in pickles and many other dishes. Quantity may vary but it is there almost every food except sweet dishes. Does it have any medicinal value? Yes, within limit it is good however nothing is too good if it is too much.

Generally it is known as Haldi (in Hindi) Indian Saffron, Indian Valerian, and Red Valerian. Botanical name is Curcuma longa. It is grown in tropical region of Asia and in India it one of most consumed herb. Raw turmeric is a tuber of curcuma long has a similar appearance like that of ginger. Active ingredient Curcumin is available in the root. Since ancient days it is being used in herbal remedies, particularly in India and in some other pockets of Asia.

The Ayurveda is thousands of years old Sanskrit Text for Indian herbal medicine. Ayurveda prescribes the use of various herbs for a very wide range of disorders, beauty care included. Easily available Turmeric and Tulsi are considered as important part of the range of herbal medicines. Raw turmeric is crushed and the paste is used for medicinal use or beauty care. Turmeric paste is known to produce fairer complexion and add luster to the skin tone. Use of turmeric paste is very common in India since ancient days. Regular use of turmeric makes the skin soft and smooth. Because of its anticipative property turmeric paste is used in time-honored herbal medicine for cuts and burns. Just the right amount of natural turmeric in Vicco Turmeric makes it a very useful cream for various applications.

Turmeric is main ingredient in Vicco Turmeric. This product is formulation of 16% turmeric, 1.2% sandalwood oil in a non-grease base. Turmeric is prescribed in Ayurvedic system of Indian medicine for various skin ailments and regular application of the turmeric paste is advocated. One of the ingredients in it is Sandalwood oil. May be a very small quantity but it improves the natural health of the skin, add shine to the skin.

In India Vicco Turmeric is sold as herbal medicine rather than a beauty cream. It is available in plastic tube and 15 gm is costing around Rs.36/-. Self-life of this product is three years from the date of manufacturing.

Personal Experience- It may be used for minor skin infections, inflammation, blemishes, wounds etc. One may even use it as a regular cream as a preventive measure.

It may be used for spots of pigmentation or blotches on the skin. My elder son is having problem of pigmentation but he ignores it and consider such spots as marks of a rugged character. But whenever he is at home he has to apply this cream because of persistence of his mother. Skin gets some relief and looks better.

I normally do not get cuts during shaving but Vicco is my aftershave cream if I get any cut. It works well and smoothen skin so that I do not get any cut next day. Both sexes may give it a try. Regular use of Vicco Turmeric as aftershave may be the best thing to do but you know its fragrance is not very refreshing.

Do you smoke? Get small burns while trying to hide it from someone. This cream is good for minor burns. I have used it on many similar occasions. I even use it on my chapped lips during winter despite its not very pleasant taste. Believe it or not it works well.

Rip Off

  1. Expensive - Rs. 36/- (please check current price) for 15 gm

  2. The cream base may not be that good for very dry skin. More sandalwood oil content and less moisture may be the right combination. May not be an easy job. Cost may shoot up.

  3. I do not like the fragrance.

’’Ayurveda is a combination of two words : ’Ayu’ + ’veda’ = ’Ayurveda’.

’Ayu’ means ’life’ and ’veda’ means ’science’ i.e. ’the science of life’.

In other words, ’the science of longevity’. The natural way of a long, healthy, and peaceful life is the meaning of Ayurveda.’’

’’Researchers have studied turmeric extensively to determine if it is an effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, and whether it holds any promise as a cancer drug. However, all of the evidence so far comes from laboratory or animal studies. Animal and laboratory studies may show a certain substance holds promise as a beneficial treatment, but further studies are necessary to determine if the results apply to humans.

According to a review article published by researchers from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Curcumin demonstrated anticancer effects at virtually all stages of tumor development in rodents and showed potential to kill cancer cells and prevent normal cells from becoming cancerous. This was particularly true for cancers of the breast, intestines, colon, stomach, and skin in rodents; however, this was not tested in humans.’’

Are there any possible problems or complications?

When used as a spice in foods, turmeric is considered safe. More research is needed to establish the safety of turmeric when used in herbal remedies. Little is known about the potential risks of taking the larger quantities used to treat illnesses. An overdose may result in stomach pain. Contact dermatitis (skin allergy) and stomach ulcers have been reported after long-term use.

People taking anticoagulant medications, drugs that suppress the immune system, or non-steroidal pain relievers (such as Ibuprofen) should avoid turmeric. Persons with bleeding disorders, obstructions of the bile duct, or a history of ulcers, also should avoid turmeric. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use this herb.
