Vicky Donor- an uncommon name, for a very uncommon film. And yet, it passes all the standards that Bollywood has set up for an entertaining film. Kyoki, Bhai aur behen log, is film me Story hai, music hai, comedy hai, dialogues hai, character hai, emotion hai, tragedy hai aur haa-ek beautiful message bhi hai.
After watching the first 40 minutes of Agent Vinod, I have lost my faith in movie trailers. So, when I went to watch Vicky Donor, I was apprehensive as to how the treatment of the film would be. As in our films, S*X or anything remotely related to it, is either too preachy or too tacky. But, the first 20 minutes of this film made me feel that this ride will be fun. And fun it was.
The real stars of this film are the dialogues and one liners, Dolly Ahluwalia( Vicky’s mom), Annu Kapoor( Dr.Chaddha), Kamlesh Gill( vicky’s grandmom), Yaami Gautam( Vicky’s love interest- Ashima), Jayanta Das( Ashima’s dad), Ashima’ s aunt( peeshi) and Aysuhman Khurana( Vicky donor), the punju bong cultural clash and the uncommon situations in this highly uncommon film.
The plot hasVicky Arora as a 25 yr old guy who wants to be a officer and hates the “dookan-daari”. His happy go lucky attitude grabs the attention of infertility specialist- Dr. Chaddha. In the doctor’s own words, Vicky is a “happy sperm.” The doctor pursues Vicky to donate his sperm. And this, is where the joy ride starts. The situations that follow are hilarious, to say the least. The high point of this film is the nuances of the Punju Bong cultural clash and the dexterity with which it has been dealt with.
Post interval, the plot focuses on the happenings in Vicky’s life, after his marriage. But it is still heart warming, and this part too, has been dealt with an uncommon maturity.
What stops the film from being perfect are the predictable ending, Ashima’s hamming and a few glitches in the character development. But, all this is pardonable as the whole film more than makes up for these tiny lacunas.
All in all, a feel good, hilarious film that gives the viewer full too entertainment sans the jokes on farts, gays, animals and brainless comedy. My sincere thanks to Diretcor Shoojit sircar for making this awesomely uncommon film. Keep it up sir. We need more films like this to deliver us from the crap that we are served on most Fridays.
PS- There’s not much of a review for the music, as I am not a big fan of Punjabi songs. In the theatre, I did see a lot of heads bobbing, feet tapping and hands drumming. The only song that truly caught my fancy was “Paani”.
