Vicky Donor – Simply Fantastic
I can’t remember when was the last time I watched a good hindi comedy movie that made me laugh for few hours.
These days it is actually quite rare that I go out to the movies, and even more rare that I review a movie. After watching trailers of Vicky Donor on television & reading few reviews in newspapers I decided to see this movie with very few expectations but in the end I had a pleasant surprise. Vicky Donor is one of those rare films that work purely on the strength of script and brilliant performances. There are no stars, no big sets, action or foreign locations. I will not be wrong to say that Vicky donar is best movie in recent time with a very sensitive subject.
Annu Kapoor (Dr Baldev Chaddha) owner of an infertility clinic is in search of high success rate sperm to provide his patients with a satisfactory result; He identifies Vicky the jobless youth as the ideal donor, and manages to persuade him that sperm donation can become a safe employment for the unemployed. When Vicky falls in love & marries Bengali banker Ashima Roy (Yaami Gautam), the film takes an emotional turn when she comes to know about Vicky’s covert contributions to sperm bank.
The best part of the movie is the performance of each and every actor. Performances of all the actors are innovative, original and fresh. Vicky Donor belongs completely to Ayushman Khurana and Anu Kapoor. The comic chemistry between the two works brilliantly. Ayushmann Khurrana in a tailor made role is natural and impressive. Annu Kapoor, the talented actor has given a convincing performance; he has added another feather to his cap.
Ashima Roy (Yami Gautam) makes an impressive debut that will keep her winning laurels for years to come. She looks pretty & acts well. She is the apt choice for the character. The supporting roles played by Kamlesh Gill and Dolly Ahluwalia as Vicky’s grand mom and mom were also enjoyable & offered some moments of comic relief. They have delivered a commendable performance. Jayanta Das, enacting the role of Yamis father has performed a brilliant act.
Hats of to the director Shoojit Sircar for handling a bold subject like sperm donation & covering all the social issues like Single Parenting, Divorcee marriage, intercultural marriage, adoption etc in a comical & matured manner. The director has successfully conceived a comedy on sex which is a not a sex comedy.
Script writer Juhi Chaturvedi deserves recognition for tackling such difficult subject in a mature & humorous way. Very excellent & top class Cinematography by Kamaljeet Negi. The music of the film can be applauded for two memorable songs, Pani da Rang & Mar Jayian"
Overall this is a surprisingly good movie, not the usual Bollywood formula potboiler. The movie has an interesting story, strong acting and excellent music.
Finally kudos to John Abraham for taking a huge risk to produce a movie on a bold concept like sperm donation.
