Ladies & gentlemen, put your hands together for the entire team of ’Vicky Donor’ for giving us a film that succeeds in entertaining the viewers to the hilt. The courage of the producers need to be appreciated because it is a great risk to make a film like this in the era where senseless films like ’Ready, Bodyguard, Don2’ to name a few are being accepted by open arms by the viewers whereas several well made films bite the dust at the box office.
Movies like ’Vicky Donor’ needs good word of mouth publicity to propel people to go to the theaters to watch this well made film, which fortunately has happened & its now left to the people to grab the opportunity to watch this movie that deserves to be accepted.
The subject of the film is absolutely fresh for the Indian viewers & may be for some it will be a surprise that the hope for the child is also possible through such methods as shown in the film.
The film is about a guy called Vicky Arora (Ayushman Khurrana), who becomes a sperm donor & when he gets married he realizes that his wife (Yami Gautam) can never conceive a child due to some complications. The plot is tailor made for a tear jerker but the way this story is narrated, it will only take the graph of viewers’ satisfaction to another level because the writer & director has chosen the funny way to present this story & they did it successfully.
Having said that it has to be borne in mind that this is not a regular Bollywood stuff because it is about a subject that is still a taboo in the major part of our society. Even the educated girls to whom Ayushman has fallen rejects him after knowing that he is a sperm donor. But the silver lining is that a small group besides those who needs a donor, has accepted it, which brings a sigh of relief.
Juhi Chaturvedi, who has written the story and screenplay gets full marks for choosing the subject and moreover her characters appears to be from real life. To write a script on a subject like this is always a risk but she succeeds big time and is sure to win a nomination for the awards in best story / screenplay department.
If I am asked to mention the best scenes in the film, I need an entire page to share it with you all. Because there is hardly any scene that is not worth mentioning. You will have to watch the film to know what I am talking about.
Photography is good though there were no lavish locations to be captured as the film revolves around few selected places where the cameraman has done good justice to his work.
Dialogues are excellent. Especially the funny ones given to Ayushaman are electric and they force you to laugh.
Nowadays I am not interested in music because of the consistent substandard it has shown since a few years but still the music of ’Vicky Donor’ comes out as a fresh air as ’Rokda’, ’Pani da rang’ ’ Chaddha’ are a treat to listen and watch on the screen. ’Rum Whiskey’ is the best song that I have seen in the recent times & the way it is picturised during the wedding of Ayushman & Yami, it brings the house down. Its a typical Punjabi atmosphere.
Full credit goes to the team who selected the artists to play the important characters in the film. Ayushman Khurrana belongs to a Punjabi family & all the members in his family are real Punjabi, which brings a solid impact to the characters they play as most of the dialogues between them are spoken in Punjabi. Same can be said about the Yamni Gautam’s father & aunty because their Bengali roots brings life to their characters.
Dolly Ahluwalia who plays Ayushman’s mother is simply superb and Kamlesh Gill who plays the role of Dolly’s mother-in-law is very natural. The scenes between these two women are superbly written, finely executed & masterly performed. The dialogues at times are so hilarious that it leaves you laughing even after the scene has changed from the screen. Watch out for the scene when both are drinking like men.
There couldn’t have been a better choice then Annu Kapoor as doctor Chaddha, who gets a role that will open the doors for few more major roles in the forth coming films. He is outstanding. Being a Punjabi he has played the role of a Punjabi doctor to perfection. His accent is so good that if you listen to him carefully, you are sure to laugh at every second dialogue that he speaks. For example he addresses Shah Rukh Khan as Sharookh in a typical Punjabi fashion. He must be nominated for best supporting actor because it will be a shame if this performance is ignored.
Jayanta Das as Yami’s father is good. Though his role is small but his character is that of a man who takes sperm donation lightly and the scene where he asks Yami to question herself is simply one of the best scene in the film.
Yami Gautam makes a very confident debut and is sure to win the award for the best new comer in female category. Her confidence level and high and she is camera friendly, as a result she gives a performance that is hardly expected of a new comer.
Shoojit Sircar, the director gets 10 on 10 for his efforts. He will be remembered for this film for a long time. He has balanced everything in the film, be it the duration of the film or the building of the characters or the selection of music or the premise, etc. he has not faltered anywhere. Best director’s nomination is registered for him.
Ayushman Khurrana who is he? An actor? A lyricist? A singer? Well, let us accept the fact that he is a multi-talented person. Besides singing he also wrote the song ’Pani da rang’ & has proved that he possess the talent that not many has in this industry. Performance wise he is top notch. Being a Punjabi, he carried the role of a Punjabi boy with panache & his dialogues in Punjabi makes his character even stronger. To me he is already the ’Best newcomer in Male category’ who is just waiting for the day to arrive so that he can receive his award.
Finally, Bollywood has done it. It has broken the shackles and have presented a film that is ACTUALLY different in all respects, thanks to the narration of the material by the director. I truly recommend this film to all. Please watch it and do share your views.
