A decent college for completing Engineering

Placements: From placements point of view, VNIT has got a pretty decent image. The placements are quite nice in most of the departments namely ECE, CSE, and EEE. Last year’s placement record showed that around 80% of the batch of a particular department were placed successfully. The companies consisted of both core & non-core companies. Many of them were IT companies. Top packages & dream packages were offered to 2 out of 5 students on an average from top companies like Siemens, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, E&Y, Reliance etc.

The highest package offered was around 16 lakhs and the lowest was roughly 6 lakhs.

The roles offered to the students ranged from core software engineer from CSE, hardware engg. from ECE, as well as other IT roles.

Also, the internship record was pretty great. Top IT companies & core companies offered interns to at least 65% of the students in the 3rd year of all departments. The highest stipend offered was 75k while the lowest was 5k for a month.

Infrastructure: The facilities provided by the college are good and manageable. The classrooms are a little congested and it gets hard for 100 students to sit for a lecture when in full attendance. But otherwise, the projectors, the lighting, fans etc. are all great. The labs are mostly AC equipped so its not at all tiresome to work in labs. The hostels are designed in a good way too; The first years have a separate hostel having a curfew time of 8 PM and girls of all the batches have a strict intime of 9 PM. However, boys from 2nd year onwards don’t have any restriction on staying out of the hostel for as long as they like. But the college gates close at 10.30 PM, which means no student can go or come from/in college after that time. The first and second years have hostels with 4 seater rooms & 3rd year onwards, you get a single room till you finish college.

The quality of food in the mess is not up to the mark at all. All the food items & dishes you get here are ruined to the maximum extent possible. The canteen, however, has comparatively better food than the mess. But then, the mess food is ultimately the only source of survival so it’s unfortunate.

During summers, the hostels have a load shedding period daily for around an hour or two in the evening. Otherwise, LAN port is provided in every room & basic facilities are maintained well.

Faculty: I don’t have much idea about the faculty and professors in other departments but as far as my department faculty is considered, I can say that they could be better. Many of my professors are well-qualified, well-behaved & decent. But that doesn’t just make them a good professor. The main common concern of this college is the faculty & the staff here like to make students work their minds off for small things. The staff of the administration section is pathetic. And also, this college tries to get money out of a student as much as possible. They set up high amount of penalties and fines for small deeds like riding a bike on campus.

The faculty members have a good knowledge of their subjects but apart from the classroom, they aren’t helpful at all. They make students do stupid assignments and work for no reason. There are no talks about new things, innovation, or learning actual practical things here. The student to faculty ratio is pretty high too. The course curriculum is outdated, well most of them, not all.

Other: I would never ever recommend this college to anyone. It’s better to study in some private college than to come to this so-called’NIT’.

After coming to this college, I’ve realised that it doesn’t matter if you complete your engineering from a private college or an IIT or NIT, what matters is you should first like the college. And clearly, I do not like this college at all.
