The movie starts off as Alok Nath, the uncle, explains how he became the guardian for Amrita Rao, his niece, when her parents passed away. Her aunty never accepts her as her daughter because she had insecurities about her owndaughter. Then a “rishta” of Shahid Kapoor, a wealthy businessman’s son, comes for Amrita. The aunty starts getting jealous of this relationship and ends up quitting the marriage. Then comes the most ridiculous climax in the history of Bollywood…fire. The house is on fire and in an attempt to save her younger cousin, Amrita endsup getting trapped in fire. She gets burned, hence, not beautiful anymore. The evil aunty now realizes that she should be nicer to Amrita since she saved her daughter. Now, the boy’s side still accepts her. The end.
Vivah: The journey from sagai to shaadi. This movie should be renamed to The LONG journey. The first thing you’ll notice is that you feel the typical barjatya film environment where everyone isjust perfect. Perfect son, perfect daughter, perfect father and perfect family. Thegroom’s family structure is same as Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. There is a father, two sons, 1 bhabhi, 1small kid. The bride’s family structure is also same.
The romance is very subtle. The lead pair talk like they are whispering, like any moment them talking normally would break the other personapart. This reminded me of how Salman khan would address Madhuri Dixit in Hum aapke hain kaun. They both are shownoverly shy. They always meet each otherby “bahana” and always talk in similar fashion to Hum aapke hain kaun. I almost felt like they were going to say“Hum aapke hain kaun” any second.
Another similarity between old barjatiya film is that they meet and live together on “vacation” event and the most important similarity is that they depart. In the time of computers, forget even a cell phone, the hero sends letters and calls on business landline to his fiancé.
A new aspect of this film was there was a “negative” character, her aunty. However, I thought the aunty of the bride was the only real character inthis film. She was worried about the wellbeing of her own daughter. Herdaughter was slightly darker than the heroin and that was the cause of problems. I think she was just being practical.
The music was terrible considering it’s a Barjatia movie. You won’t remember any songs from this movie. The songs just pop out of nowhere and they just seem to drag the story. The songs are so situational that you feel like they are talking instead of singing. The first half and the songs can easily be trimmed to make this story more effective, if any.
To sum up, I think the script was very weak. The writers relied too much on emotional aspect rather than the story. The weakest point of this movie was the climax. And songs were less than mediocre.
