I bought a VW Jetta HighLine AT TDI on March 2009. Well initial 2 years of the car was good with normal/regular issues which can crop up in any car but what I was not expecting was the front and rear suspension asking for an overhaul on after driving 36k km. I bought this car because I though it was an epitome of German Engineering in this league.
Well suspension overall haul costed me Rs.1.3 lacs which was not covered in additional warranty. Devil lies in the detail and I think I should have checked that. VW Jetta has a warranty on suspension only for 10k kms or 6 months which ever is earlier. You do not expect that you pay Rs.17 lacs plus for a car and these kind of warranties are applicable and dealer never tells you anything.
Well I paid for the suspension and I got new tyres at same time. 3-4 months later another part which to me was explained as some joint rod connecting to the steering wheel went bad. Another part worth 90k but this was covered in the warranty. Other challenge is lack of availability of spare parts. In both instances, I had to wait for more than 20 days before the part was available with the dealer.
I have completed 3.5 years with the car and I am keen on selling it and buy a Hyundai/Toyata/Honda. They have understood Indian conditions and also has much better support network for customers as well as their dealers.
So my final word is that please do not buy a vw product in India, you will surely be disappointed.
