Volkswagon dumping defective fuel gauges on buyers

I purchased a Vento automatic(Volkswagon) from Shaman Cars in Worli, Mumbai on 14th jan.

Within 3 months, the car stalled in the middle of a busy road. A call to the service centre resulted in a towing van reaching the site after a couple of hours(notechnical person, mechanic etc). They towed the car to their service centre; the service centre took 2 days to make a diagnosis - a defective fuel gauge, which showed the petrol tank as half full, when it was actually empty. The car has now been with the service centre since 2 weeks as the spare part required - "a new fuel gauge" is not in stock!

A friend who purchased a Volkswagon polo on the same day has had to change his defective fuel gauge twice within 3 months.

This leads me to think there is something wrong in the fuel gauge in all Volkswagons. In any other country, they would have asked for a recall of all cars - here no one is bothered.

Not only was I not given a car to use in the interim, I have been asked to pay for 10 litres of petrol which the company will put in the tank to check the gauge!
