Kyonki baap bhi kabhi beta tha

I sit down to watch a movie to get away from all the sob sobbing on the idiot box... and here I find the same stuff in this movie.

Okay - you got the message - I didn’t exactly swoon over this movie.

However, to be fair, let me put things more objectively:

Story: Ishwar (Amitabh (God of acting)) is a businessman (he makes toys) who came up the hard way. He has a seemingly perfect life with wife Sumi (Shefali Chhaya Shah (courtesy Vipul Shah - and thank God for that - at least we get to see a good actress on screen)) and a spoilt brat of a son Aditaya (Akshay Kumar), who falls in love with Puja (Priyanka Chopra), gets married to her and makes her give the good news all within a few minutes of footage (now that’s a fast life!) Trouble starts when Ishwar realises that he has a terminal disease due to which he has very little time at hand. The problem is that Aditya is a spoilt brat who does not understand the value of money. The story focusses on how Ishwar, otherwise a doting father has to treat his son like a sworn enemy and kick him out of the house (along with a pregnant Puja) to make him realise his responsibilities and make him independant. Then its all a lot of sob sob.

Pros: There are some hilarious scenes between Ishwar and Puja’s father Natubhai (Boman Irani) in the first half. Rajpal Yadav is also hilarious and his scenes with Boman Irani are pretty amusing. Amitabh of course is as usual gripping and is perhaps the only one in the movie whose dialogues and expressions really make you go sob. Shefali Shah is also brilliant and her controlled expressions are beautiful. Everyone has put in a good effort on the acting front and Priyanka is proving that she can also act a good bit.

Cons: Lots of unnecessary emotional melodrama. I don’t understand why Akshay Kumar had to do a dangerous stunt to buy food for his pregnant wife - he could have done something simpler than getting bitten by hounds. Also, the climax was not all that touching and lot of it seemed unrealistic and more like a soap opera.

Overall, worth a watch - but only once... you can of course watch the first half again for the gags.
