What are the expectations out of a Spielberg movie?
Fantastic, excellent, dramatic, thrilling and superb in every word associated to movies
To be honest this is not what I ended up watching once I came out of the multiplex. War of the Worlds is a Great Spielberg like movie in some parts but finally ends up as a movie with great expectations and zero returns.
On seeing the Team involved in the movie: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Steven Spielberg; there has to be a lot of expectations from the movie but this time they have really disappointed.
The story is a little predictable. The only change this time is that the hero of the movie does not try to eliminate the danger but just to defend himself.
The characterization of the movie is good and all the characters seem to have performed up to there potential. The one person who stands out of the entire cast is not TC (if you guessed so). Infact it is Dakota Fanning who plays Rachel Ferrier, one of the two kids of Ray Ferrier (TC) and his separated wife Mary (Miranda Otto).
The movie has been well drafted at the start were TC has been showed as a separated father who always tries to win the hearts of his children although he is a little careless with his things. Once the children come to TC, that is were the drama starts. The aliens start landing on the earth, instead on the earths core via lighting striking at a single point several times and occupying the huge huge machines they had buried here millions and zillions of years back.
The screenplay and the acting from TCs end when he has to leave his ever persistent son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) to fight with the military against the alien machines is excellent and displays the traits of a great Team combining together.
The movie then takes an easy pace till the time comes for Morgan Freeman to enter the scenes. Before this period Dakota gets into her own and shows her class of at least getting nominated for the Oscars. If I am allowed to comment on her expressions and conversations, they are just excellent. The conversation between the 2 giants TC and Morgan has been portrayed very well and is really entertaining for people who appreciate acting.
The biggest disappointing part of the movie has been the climax. As far as I understand, the climax of any movie always keeps its impression on the viewers irrespective of what is happening at the start. This is were the magician director failed. I somehow do not approve to the way the ending was made. Instead of narration of the reason of the aliens dieing due to the organisms on the earth to which human beings are immune, there should have been some thing more involving and thrilling.
The camera and sound effect of the movie are as excellent as any SS movie. At least we are not disappointed there. ;-))
Irrespective of the output I still feel this movie should be seen once but only and only once.
P.S.: Do not watch this at home. Theater with good screen and sound effects is the best place to get the most of the very little this movie has on offer.
