Chembra Peak

It is quite surprising that Wayanad is not among the trekking spots at mouthshut.com. So I thought to write a review on it concentrating its trekking wonder. Chemera peak is the 2nd highest peak of Kerala & 3rd highest of south India. to reach here you have to reach Calicut or Kozhikode. from there u can find buses or jeeps to Wayanad. Kalpetta is the place to be, it is the HQ of Wayanad district. from calicut it wud take about an hour. it wud be better if u cud arrange for bikes at Calicut. u cud easily find after showing ur driving licence. the way from Calicut to Wayanad is through green hills & tea gardens. for trekking u have to first arrange for tents & sleeping bags from KTDC office, which can be easily reached, or from some private firms. at KTDC, its cheap but there are chances that u wont find any no. of tents n bags. for trekking u wud have to take permission from forest office, KTDC or other firm will help u. they will also arrange for guide, without which it is difficult to get permission. take an auto or taxi or bus from Kalpetta to the Chemera peak. they will initially drop u at another town, about 20 mins from Kalpetta. from that place u will easily get auto to reach the watch tower of the peak. from here begins ur trekking........ it wud take some 2 hours to trek from there to the peak, so start early. reach the tower at around 12 noon. the trekking wud be the best during june to november. the whole trekking is moderate. at times it is steep. u will find many small waterfalls too on ur way up. we found foxes on our way up. there is a very beautiful heart-shaped lake up there. u will find deer also, we found them in the morning. some people say they spotted black panther there. so it could be dangerous there. we heard growling sounds in the night in the bushes surrounding our camp. u would have to pick up lots of wood there as it wud get really cold in the night & also without fire there is the danger of animal attacks. guide will help u pick woods. that place is full of elephants, deer, foxes & some birds. u can easily spot elephants’ dung there. camp very near to the lake. it wud be fun to listen to the nearby waterfall during night. in the morning u can see the clouds covering the down valley. it is a very very beautiful place to trek. a group of 4-5 people would be enough. I think it is enough of wayanad from me. for more, make a trip there.
