A long journey to Karachi

Welcome to Karachi tries too hard to be funny but succeeds only in very small scenes. The success of a comedy depends on whether it can make an audience laugh at the first three jokes. If it succeeds in doing that you are set to enjoy the rest. If the result of the first three jokes is a wry face then you have a situation.

Welcome to Karachi had me grimacing in the first ten minutes and that did not bode well. The movie is essentially a road trip one about two dumb Indians who stray into Pakistan when their boat gets caught in a storm. The journey back home gives the film ample scope to invent situations that the two idiots try to get out of but just fall into yet another mess and so on and so forth. The situations most times are not that funny and when they could be the jokes built around them fall a bit flat. The movie ambles along at a decent pace as such but doesn’t really grab you. The second half picks up steam  and is much better and the end is quite funny.

Arshad Warsi can do funny roles as we have seen before and he performs well but Jackky Bhagnani as the happy garba loving Gujjubhai puts in a very good performance.

As for yourself, make sure you go in a great mood, maybe after Happy hours so that you smile at the first three jokes and have the patience to wait for the movie to pick up a wee bit in the second half.
