Well lots of review already talk about the movie & the similarity to the old Malgudi Days!!! Malgudi Days was certainly far better.
Though WTS also touches the vibes of the small town village. I can certainly appreciate Benegals view point in going through this film from the eye of the "writer".
One can also relate drastically to the election for panch, the nag baba, the postman, the paan beedi shops, the stationary shops. However one should or rather could not relate to:
First aid centre/ medical centre at such village where ladies still wear ghunghat not to have any femal staff?
Compounder being allowed to check ladies in a closed room.
In a village where bus stop itself is in outskirts & only cycles are seen, a lady going thru a scooty!!!
Abusive language getting farstrentched.
5.Stretching the plot far & then the nice moments being popped like popping ballons at the end.
- At a village whereverybody is smat enogh to write thier name but are not educated, a girl being married to a dog?
7.Eunanches living in villages, although people doesnt like them to stay near thier place even in big cities!!!
8.A retired soldier doing lots of over acting.
A very good actor being utterly wasted in Rajat Kapoor. One expected a lot from him.(Totally directors fault).
I wondered whether this was a bhojpuri movie when I saw ravi kishan, quite surprised. and have to remind him to be more sensetive to the subject rather than the outlook of the "Ravi Kishan".
I can go on & on.
But having said that lets not forget the sweet good moments the moview bring:
One get a very good feel of the village , the indian typical superstitions, the way people in village still get connected to others by letters (albeit you have to forget the "mobile chitthe")
The emotional moments shared specially when the narrator is ina fix between whether to help the eunanch or the thakur.
The title song definately arising curiosity about the movie.. however not for long.
The scripts or rather the Dialogures are superb.. you have to give that much credit to them, quite original & fresh.
5.Characters, truly playing thier part. But without a compelling intresting plot how can you justify thier good performance going wasted.
- Shreyas Talapde- Superb acting. He was natural & the ease with which he entered into the shoes of Mahadev was simply superb.
I would advice people either to skip the movie or go with a mind set that they would not be entertained but can see how some very good script & performance by actors can go down the drain with no or minimal plot.
