What’s your rashee is an old-fashioned, dull and excruciating film which requires a lot of patience while watching it. It is based on a gujarati novel ’ kimball ravenswood’. Well I have not read this novel so I can’t say which one was better or if the movie was well adapted or not.
But I can definitely say that this movie is written very badly and it is ashutosh’s weakest film till date. The story of the movie goes like this: Harman baweja is working in chicago and he is summoned to india by his family and when he reaches india he finds out that his family is in debt and the only thing that can save them is harman’s marriage bcoz harman’s grandfather has decided to gave all his property to harman after his marriage. At first harman refuses to marry but after much persuasion by his family he decides to marry by meeting one girl from every rashee.
The concept of the movie is new but I didn’t find it much interesting. The characters of all the girls played by priyanka are very juvenile and stupid barring a few of them. The characters like the pisces girl who believe that she and harman were lovers in their past birth and his annoying father, the libra girl who wants to have a contract marriage, the leo girl who rejects harman just bcoz he didn’t wanted to have a gola bcoz he thought it was made from unhygienic water, the sagittarius girl who is an astrologer and wants to have sex with him first in order to erase the effect of shukra planet from harman’s horoscope, the rich taurus girl who acts like a mad woman.
The screenplay is written in a very pathetic way, the narrative drags, bores and the stories of all the girls are plain boring and consists of too many songs. The characters of all the girls depicts their circumstances rather than the traits of their rashees although the scorpio girl is depicted perfectly with the scorpion qualities. The narrative is simply dull and is written in a flat manner with no highs and lows in it. The direction by ashutosh is average and cinematography is superb with the exotic locales of chicago and mumbai captured brilliantly. The film also consists od some stupid sub-plots like darshan zariwala’s affair with his yoga teacher and his wife hiring a detective to keep an eye on them.
The comedy in the movie is very juvenile and senseless. The music is ok with some beautiful songs and some irritating songs. The climax is very stupid bcoz harman himself was unaware about his wife till he reaches the mandap and the way he gets married in a hasty way is just so complicated and amusing. The performances by the supporting cast are passable. Harman is just average in his performance and has no charm or strong screen presence to become a hero. But what saves this film from becoming a complete failure is an outstanding performance by priyanka chopra. This girl is improving in a drastic way. Last year she gave a soul stirring and remarkable performance in fashion, then came her natural charming act in dostana, then her superb performance in kaminey and now comes another heart wrenching performance in this movie. She is brilliant in every 12 roles and she just melts your heart with her soulful performance. I would recommend this movie just bcoz of priyanka chopra. Watch this movie on dvd just for priyanka.Priyanka is sparkling otherwise the film is a no show
