Balram Halwai was trapped in shackles of relationship .He dreamt to be free from being servant but he couldn’t as it would have endangered his relatives in his village. He was going crazy by being servant& insulted. In this journey for freedom he uses tools like blackmailing, murder, communication, which show how person is created in India.
There is no straight way to be great or free in India(especially for poor people) .One need to kill, black mail people. At the end the protaganist Balaram halawai achieves the success& he does’nt regret about his bad deeds. He also relates it with revolution. He recalls two successful revolutions in world.
Author uses word darkness for servants, dependents.He writes, he is in light when independent. He also describes contradiction between newly built shopping mall where along side there are huts& poor people.
I liked the author’s symbolic& humorous way of narration. The book tells reality in India. Only thing that I thought bad about book was it may encourage corrupt behavior in people. But later I thought author has attitude of calling spade a spade& people should learn reality& try to change their selfish behavior which leads to corruption.
