The title is a question that every married person has enquired from himself or herself at some point in his or her marriage. The movie centers around Patricia Agnew, a novelist who has written the best-selling book, Why Did I Get Married?
Patricia is married to Gavin. Every year, they go on a holiday with three other couples. This isn’t any ordinary holiday, though. The couples get together and ask themselves why they got married in the first place. We are introduced to workaholic Diane, who is married to Terry and seems to love her work more than her husband. Then there’s the loud and embarassing Angela who is more successful than her husband Marcus who works for her. And finally, there’s Sheila, Mike and Trina. That’s right, there’s another woman in Sheila’s husband’s life. At the outset it seems like this will be just like their previous holidays; filled with laughter, good times and relaxation. However, things go wrong when everyone’s secrets are revealed. That’s right, even the seemingly perfect couple, Patricia and Gavin has unresolved issues and skeletons in their closets to deal with.
With a good plot as a premise, talented cast and witty dialogue, it’s no surprise that this movie is a must-watch. Jill Scott’s performance as the overweight Sheila is especially endearing. Although this is a comedy, there are moments that genuinely touch one’s heart.
This is one movie that deals with the complicated topic of marriage very well. Rest assured that you won’t be asking’why did I watch this movie?’
