Hi yall
I got me a wincable (mumbai) connection waay back in 2000. I had it for over a year before I dumped them.
It was overall quite crappy -- verrry unreliable, often down, mostly slow. The usual stuff. Im sure youve heard the juicy details from everyone else. Ill give you a unique perspective by telling you things your probably wont find in other reviews.
The good:
They spent most of their time experimenting with different ISPs. Once they got themselves a Dishnet DSL line at 512 K and kept it a secret (it was only for special high paying customers). Unfortunately, I found out their IP settings and used it. It was sweet! Amazing speed and a true broad band experience (like those lucky dudes in the US can enjoy). Unfortunately, after a month, their cost was too high and they stopped this dsl thing.
Better:
Even with their regular gateway, before they had got too many customers, in the good old days, they didnt have any bandwidth dividing system -- you had the ability to milk the network. If you had a download manager, you could extract a much larger share of the network traffic -- if no one else was doing the same thing at the same time.
On new years eve, when presumably every one was out partaying -- I managed to juice it for 300Kilobytes (not kilobits) per second. Thats as fast as a 2x cdrom drive!
The Bad:
This was a fraction of the time. Mostly it sucked badly.
The worse:
Their customer service was shi**y. I dont know how they slept at night.
The worst:
Their big boss is this mafia don sthyle guy who thinks he is this badass buisness man. He talks with this movie sthyle lisp and a wierd accent. he would make good films and he spouts lies. Youll go mad dealing with him.
But what it boils down to basically is that youve got to have a reliable dependable internet service. It may not be as darkly entertaining as Wincable, but youll get what you pay for.
