I am a typical Indian, who has been trained to believe that windows is the only operating system that a normal human can work on. No offense, dear Linux/Mac users. you guys are definitely smarter than me:)
I have been working on PCs for more than 15yrs and all the while have worked heavily on Windows based workstations, even to an extent that I switched to Borland C+ from Turbo C+! It is not that I did not try my hands on Redhat/Ubuntu(Linux) and Tiger/Leopard(Mac), but since I was so much into the user friendly ways of Windows, could not develop an overall comfort with those Non-windows products(though there are particular features which I liked in each of those other OS).
Now coming to the point. What are the features of Win7. To be honest, the product looks good to the user only due to the fact that its a successor of an infinitesimally downgraded OS which Microsoft have produced. VISTA
1. How fast is the system which is running on Win7? Yes, its faster than Vista. But, is it better than the benchmark, XP? NO!
2. Does it crash or overheats the hardware? Yes, but fewer times than Vista. I need to restart my laptop everyday to ensure that the system does not hang. Earlier I used to hibernate my laptop(XP based) and restarted once every fortnight to ensure smooth performance.
3. Does it let other standard softwares to run without issues? Well.mostly yes! However, you try working on an MS Office s/w which is heavier than 100Mb, it easily crashes!
4. How is the interface? Yes, it is user-friendly and is pleasing to the eye. The themes are amazing, though will slow down the performance of the system. So turn off all your visualization jazz in Win7 to get it work the way youd want any OS to work.
5. Compatibility with games and other softwares? Mostly yes. MS ensured that they fund most gaming companies with truckloads of cash to move their s/w compatibility from XP to Win7. So do we have an option.NO!
6.Other known issues:
a) Irritating Aero: Initially I had several issues with Aero which were later fixed by a change in registry settings.
b) Icons disappear: If you install any custom theme from MS website, chances are that youd not see many of your icons(such as My computer or recycle bin) on your desktop. Thats crazy!
c) License registration issues: Though I was using a genuine Win7 OS, in the 4th month of its use, I received a notification that the OS isnot genuine. I had to raise the flag with the MS customer support to get this rectified. Solution: re-imaged the system.
d) Heavy mini-dump: Win7 will keep the mini-dump for the last 50documents, which need to be corrected at the registry level to ensure that my system resources are not utilized on unwanted files.
