MS readers must have recently read about two Husband and wife Surgeons based in Tamil Nadu who made their 15 year old son perform a Cesarean operation. They had also vediographed the entire operation in order to get their sons name enlisted in Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest ever person to carry out a surgery. The couple were ecstatic to show this Vedio to their entire Medical fraternity which has now landed them in Jail. The poor boy had also to surrender to a Juvenile Court and later took a bail.
Our heart goes out for the boy who according to me was not at fault and should not even have a case booked against him.
We come across several instances day to day as to how parental pressures affect the child in a big way, sometimes even driving them to commit suicide. My appeal to the Parents through this column is "Please leave the child alone", Help them to identify their strengths and develop them". Not all are born brilliant or talented.
On the flip side, this boy must have been brilliant to perform a Surgery on his own at the age of 15 and hence one should leave him alone to study and for all you know after 7 years he may turn out to be one of the "Top surgeons" in India.
I also suggest the schools when they invite the parents for meeting with teachers, should compulsorily conduct a Counseling session for parents as to how they should deal a pressure situation with their children.
Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in oneself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with the inner drive, go much further than people with vastly superior talent.
So lets help the children to develop faith in themselves rather than pressurizing them to perform.
