Tragic love

This lengthy novel was written by Emily Bronte, sister of Charlotte Bronte, who wrote Jane Eyre. Yes, writing does run in these sister’s blood. Both wrote stories of tragic and impossible love, but both are different and unique.

’’Wuthering Heights’’ is the story of Cathy Earnshaw, a spoiled little girl with a soft spot in her heart for Heathcliff, an abandoned child her father takes in. After her father dies, Cathy and Heathcliff harbor a secret love, against the wishes of her tyrannical brother, Hindley.

But Cathy’s selfish nature leaves her wanting better surroundings and more security than Heathcliff can give her.So he leaves to make his fortune and Cathy, believing that he won’t come back, marries rich Edgar Linton.

But Heathcliff does come back, and though he hates her for marrying Edgar, neither can suppress their love for one another.

This is a tragic tale of love, hate, jealousy and all the other emotions manifested in love. It show how hate can destroy a person, and how not marrying for love can devestate. Cathy’s selfishness and Heathcliff’s anger are what destroys them in the end, and the book warns us not to make the same mistakes.
