I was seeking a safe, anonymous method of occasionally corresponding online since I had been separated for over a year and was missing that unique male perspective.
I didnt have time to invest into a full-blown relationship and wasnt interested. I only wanted a safe way to socialize. I ran across the Yahoo Personals website and submitted a goofy-type ad requesting a pen-pal. I received many responses. (Seems there are many goofy-types out there!) Some made me smile, others were a bit strange and one in particular, from Dave, made me laugh out loud.
Dave and I began writing short, light-hearted notes back-and-forth. After writing for several months, we discovered a lot of common interests and enjoyed each others sense of humor. We then decided to try a face-to-face meeting. Both of us had heard horror stories and were feeling apprehensive, however we did meet at a local restaurant for coffee and it went very well.
He didnt pressure me and if you feel pressured, RUN!
Some advise:
1.) BE CAUTIOUS!
2.) Do a background check. If he/she is honest and has your best interests in mind, they will encourage this! If they protest, FORGET IT!
3.) Dont go to their house and dont let them come to yours on the first date. MEET AND STAY IN A PUBLIC PLACE and inform someone you trust about your plans, or take them with you.
4.) If they seem excessively charming, be suspicious and question their judgement. Most average, reliable, real people save this behavior for someone they learn to trust over a long period of time.
When I recall this face-to-face meeting, I realize I put myself in potential danger and A LOT of things could have gone wrong. Luckily, I met someone wonderful. If it werent for the internet, we would have never met since were both home bodies.
Just be careful and do your homework--so if and when you do actually meet, you can concentrate on having fun!
(Dave and I are now engaged after 2 years of dating!)
Thanks Yahoo!
