Hollywood rip-offs seems to be the order of the day in Bollywood. I didnt say this but I read it somewhere (Quote: I think Subhash K Jhas article in MSN.. Iam not sure). Whatever be it, getting inspired and attempting a movie and keeping the viewers interest alive is the order of the day for the movie to be a hit. The current bollywood release Yakeen starring Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra (together after their disastrous Asambhav) is supposed to be inspired from Shattered (I havent seen this movie) and it does keep you hooked provided you havent read the review before watching the movie or havent seen its original Shattered. Since I didnt get an opportunity to see Shattered, I did like the movie.
The Story
Since this is a suspense thriller, Iam not going to reveal much of the story. The story starts with a car racing on a hill and finally falling off a cliff. Simar (Priyanka Chopra), after gaining consciousness, is informed by the doctor that she and her husband Nikhil Oberoi (Arjun Rampal) met with an accident and that her husbands face is deformed. The doctor also tells her that Nikhil is in amnesia (Loss of memory). Simar is shattered by this news but asks the doctor to perform plastic surgery on Nikhil. Nikhil gets his face back but he is unsure of the happenings around him. He tries to recall the past but could only visualize the car racing on the hill. He tries to put things in place and his friends sister Tanya (Kim Sharma) helps him in this mission. Involved with them is a detective (Saurabh Shukla) and together they find a series of baffling events and how it culminates forms the climax.
Performances
Arjun Rampal proves that he can act if given an opportunity. Though it is not the best performance, I would definitely say that he has improved than his previous flicks. Priyanka Chopra is the star of the movie from the start till the end. She is an absolute delight to watch on screen. She looks mind-blowingly gorgeous in some scenes and her eyes sparkle with expression. Her dialogue delivery in some scenes are very fast and at the same time she gets the right expressions for the fast dialogues. A very good performance after Aitraaz. Kim sharma is there in the movie and does a okay job. Saurabh shukla is quite good though he doesnt have a full fledged role. Sudhanshu Pandey is good and acts well.
Music is the major hurdle to the screenplay. It just spoils the mood of the thriller. Even otherwise, one or two songs are definitely hummable but is not asked for in a thriller. Cinematography is good. The director is a debutant named Girish Dhamija and he does a good job. Script could have been a bit more racing though they are some twists in the second half.
Verdict
Yakeen is a decent movie and it has enough twists and turns and the gorgeous Priyanka chopra.
I would definitely give 6.5-7 out of 10 for this thriller.
